Left comment on Chickadee's Diner closing page, but will repeat here and hope Ted sees it. New Marshall St location is "closed for remodeling". Don't know how long since this is first time I have been by in about two months, but saw this 01/03/18.
BTW, the old bowling alley on Broad River Rd (can't remember the name even though I bowled there in a league for about 4 years) has a "SOLD" tag on the big for-sale sign in front, but no other details.

The bowling alley on Broad River was Brunswick. Had so much fun Midnight Bowling when I was in my late teens to early 20's (early 90's). I miss it before it got so bad that you had to pay to get in. You got a credit towards bowling with the entrance fee. It kept the rift-raft in the parking lot.

Hey Ted, how do your ads work? Are they pay-per-click? I have always had an ad blocker on so I didn't know you had ads until I read the Free Times article. If your ads are pay-per-click, I will click on them everyday from home and work if it helps you. I'm the regulars here will do the same.
I remember having websites in the late 90's and early 2000's with ads and I was making over $300 a month just from ads. I had all my friends and family members clicking on my ads everyday. I even won a contest ($500) in 1998 that sent the most traffic to the website drugstore.com.
Let us know how we can help. I'm sure if its as easy as clicking a ton of folks here will do it for you.

@gofinsc -- I have a master page where I see all comments as they come in regardless of whether I happen to visit the page where they are left. I'll try to get by there.
@Sidney -- It's standard Google AdSense ads. I rarely see them myself as I usually have Javascript turned off, and that's all it takes to suppress them. I think it's done on a per-click basis, but they claim to have some way to tell if people are gaming them, so only click if you see something that interests you. (Generally they will be based on your browsing history).

Hey, I don't know if you want to go this far, but the long-time KC's Hotdogs cart, a staple of downtown Columbia, has ceased operations. Looks like he didn't want to play by the city's rules anymore (failure to pay H-taxes, conflicts over his set-up, etc.).

It appears the Goodwill next to Kmart in Lexington will be moving soon. Constractors have cleared a lot next to Riley drugs less than a quarter of a mile away that says a Goodwill will be built there.
This is not surprising. The Lexington Barber Shop already mvoed out (now located next to Lowe's Foods across from Lexington HS) and with the demise of Sears / Kmart, it is only a matter of time before this entire shopping plaza is empty. No, the Kmart isn't on the closing list yet, but it will end up there eventually. What I want to know is with everything else already gone, will the raze the building when Kmart closes?

Sears/Kmart has announced another round of closings and none are in SC so I think it's premature to talk about what will happen with a store that is still currently operating...
Andrew
9 Jan 18 at 5:35 pm
-
Having said that, if the Kmart there does close, a lot of what happens depends on who winds up taking over the space and what their preferences are...
Andrew
9 Jan 18 at 6:55 pm
-
@Andrew,
Premature? Maybe. Yes, they are still operating, but Sears / Kmart is not going to survive. The company's debt is too high for the remaining stores to earn enough profit to pay down that debt. Closing stores is not reducing the debt. It may reduce the rate at which the debt accumulates, but it is not enough to save the company.
I believe it was on this site in late 2014 or early 2015 that I read all Columbia area Kmarts (Lexington included) were to be closed by the end of 2015. Obviously, that rumor did not turn out to be true, but regardless, it is only a matter of time.

This is only a rumor that I heard from my wife.
I thought I would mention it only because it has to do with Richland Mall.
The rumor was that Publix is planning to open a Super Publix to compete with the Lowes grocery store that is building in the old BiLo/PW on Forest Drive. It would also pull customers from Kroger. Publix would leave the store in Trenholm Plaza and the new store should help the congestion in the Trenholm Plaza parking lot.
I'm not sure when this will be announced (or if it is even true).
Matt

The Super Publix would be located somewhere in Richland Mall. (I should have included that).

I wonder if Goodwill is doing this as part of a corporate policy of having their stores in independent locations and not in strip malls. All of the stores they have opened around here recently (378 and Red Bank) have been built from the ground up.

Curious as to if anyone would know where the original location of Jeffers -McGill appliances war before they moved to the old Landmark Square on Garners Ferry?

Del, I do know that Jeffers McGill was in Cedar Terrace before moving to Landmark Square (which is still officially Landmark Square)...
As for Goodwill, I'll say that I have noticed what others have said about Goodwill moving into 'independent' locations as opposed to shopping center/strip mall type stores. I've noticed that Family Dollar and Dollar General are gravitating towards independent locations and I think Goodwill is doing likewise...more than likely it's a shift in business strategy more than anything else.
I don't see Publix as one trying the 'Super' Publix concept as (based on what I've seen/read) Publix doesn't have that type of store unless it's some type of prototype or pilot project I'm unaware of. I think it's more likey for a portion of Richland Mall to be torn down and a Kroger Marketplace store built before a Publix superstore built. Even if Publix were to move out of Trenholm Plaza, I doubt that it would alleviate congestion much because there is so much more to be had as I see there being several more anchor tenants (such as Stein Mart, The Fresh Market and there are others you could make a case for I'm sure) and even if Publix moved out, it's liable that someone would be filling their old space in short order because that's the type of demand Trenholm Plaza has...

According to their website, Jeffers McGill started in 1961. I found articles from the 1960s showing them at 2900 Devine Street. That spot appears to be occupied by a Benjamin Moore store, now. By the early 70s, they were in Cedar Terrace, but I haven't been able to determine exactly when they moved.

Due to higher wages for Walmart employees around the US, 63 Sam's Club locations will be closed (25 already are closed). It was even rumored more are closing, and our Harbison, Forest Drive, and Sandhills locations may be in the mix. (More likely the Forest Drive location, because it looks like it isn't thriving as much anymore)

Haverty's Furniture on Two Notch near Columbia Mall is closing and it is rumored by The State paper that Burlington Coat Factory and Macy's are both closing the anchor stores at Columbia Mall.
Mike
12 Jan 18 at 10:40 pm
-
So I found this article speculating to the future of MattressFirm and wondering if the 13 Columbia locations (among others) are going to close up shop...
Haverty's just completed a move from Colonial Village on Colonial Life Blvd onto Harbison and I wouldn't be surprised if they have something similar in mind but idk whare it'd go....
Burlington currently has a store under construction in the Village at Sandhill...I consequently wouldn't be surprised if the store at Columbia Place Mall goes dark when Sandhill's opens.
Macy's in general isn't in the greatest of shape according to reports I'm aware of but it was recently noted that while Macy's did announce 7 closings, none of them are in SC...

Macy's has been sponsoring their Thanksgiving parade since 1924. I suppose as long as a TV network can sell advertising it will carry on, though I would not be surprised of a name change. Amazon's Thanksgiving Parade just doesn't have that ring to it.
Joe Shlabotnik
13 Jan 18 at 3:27 am
-
Not only that, Amazon's Thanksgiving Day parade doesn't have the tradition and people are liable to still call it the Macy's Thanksviging Day parade much like many still refer to what is now Columbia Place by its former name of Columbia Mall (or many did that with USAir when it was US Airways (though it's now merged into American))...
Andrew

Who actually watches the parades on TV? I have never watched one for more than 10 minutes. And that includes the Christmas Carillon Parade, Rose Bowl, Macy's, etc. They are just super BORING to me.
I wouldn't be surprised if Haverty's moves into the old HH Gregg in Sandhills.

I have read articles of speculation of Publix Super Markets replacing Publix #597 (Trenholm Plaza).
Additional Publix stores should open. Garner's Ferry Road is speculated as a future store location. Publix opening a store in Sumter is gaining traction.

Burlington does have a ground up store under construction in the Village at Sandhill (per recent discussions here)...it remains to be seen whether it'll mean a 3rd Burlington in the Columbia market or if Columbia Place Mall's store will go dark upon the completion thereof.
I've seen it noted that Publix has a new store under construction in Red Bank which they've been looking at for several years. When they were building their Hendrix Crossing store they looked at either that one or one in Red Bank and they ultimately decided to build the Hendrix Crossing store and now it appears as if Red Bank is getting a Publix after all. I have a vision of Newberry getting a Publix as well. It's hard to know where the Garners Ferry area Publix would go.
Not only is Red Bank getting a Publix but also I've read they're getting an Aldi.

In regards to Publix's speculated Garner's Ferry Road location, I have heard mention of a location near Pineview Drive/Hallbrook Drive.
BI-LO #5065, Garner's Ferry Commons, 7830 Garner's Ferry Road, Columbia, South Caorlina 29209-3957, could be a potential Publix store location. Southeastern Grocers, parent company of BI-LO, may be in the position to divest stores with its debt problem. Publix has acquired BI-LO stores in the past.

Publix coming to Newberry would be an improvement in the grocery competition. Supermarkets Food Lion and Harvey's fail in comparison to hypermarket Walmart Supercenter.
Beyond Newberry and Sumter, I look for Publix to enter smaller cities and larger towns across South Carolina like Conway, Florence, Gaffney, Laurens, Moncks Corner, Orangeburg, Pickens, Seneca, and Walterboro.

I was at Frank’s Discount Tire in Lexington. Apparently, Frank’s has sold out and Frank’s will no longer exist after May 2018. The new company is called Tire Engineers. Sad to see another local company sell out to a national brand. I am going to miss those corny Frank’s radio commercials.

I'm just waiting for Burlington to close at Dutch Square Mall. That should kill that old Mall completely I would think. I'm surprised Office Depot is still there as slow as they are. The only reason Columbiana Mall is doing good is because of Location, Location, Location. Some stores along Harbison are gone, but most are still doing right well for the time being.

Does anyone remember The Station, a 1970s restaurant across from Dutch Square? It stood on the corner of Bush River and Colonial, later site of Sounds Familiar. I recall it being my favorite as a young child and was disappointed when it closed (burned?). Seems like they served crunchy bread sticks and had a net strung from the second floor balcony. I’d love to see a picture if there is one out there anywhere.

Yes, I remember The Station restaurant. It was one of my regular lunch spots 40 years ago. They had a western motif for their decor. Wagon wheels on the wall. That sort of thing. But my favorite thing was their lasagna. I haven't had any as good as theirs since then.
Then they just vanished. I don't recall anything about a fire.John R

This is actually pretty old, but the Intertape Polymer plant, formerly known as Anchor Continental at the intersection of Beltline and Shop moved to Blythewood a few years ago. The WIS report I found indicated that Harbison Court's Babies R Us location will be the one closing as part of the restructuring (bear in mind that Babies R Us and Toys R Us are under the same corporate umbrella)...
Andrew

-
Furthermore, this report yields that the only one in South Carolina has an address of 254 Harbison Blvd. which matches up with Harbison Court. The Toys R Us has an an address of 140 Columbiana Drive.
This will mean 3 bigger spots in Harbison Court that are vacant between the vacancies left by closing both Off Broadway Shoe Warehouse & GolfSmith (both of which have already featured here) and now Babies R Us.

I was cleaning out a house earlier. I found a very old business card for the Rendezvous Cafe. Which was located at 2379 Gervais St. Also, a very strange phone number or something I'm not familiar with printed on it. Phone Al. 6-9549
Anyone remember this place or know about the phone number??Arthur
24 Jan 18 at 6:28 pm

Arthur - the AL stood for ALpine, or the telephone exchange that served that phone number. AL corresponded to 25 so the phone number was 256-9549. The only other exchange I remember as a kid was SUnset or 78. I don't recall what others may have been but there had to be more as Lexington always had the 35 prefix and Chapin the 34.

@badger- I remember when that boiler explosion happened. I worked in a warehouse off of Leesburg at the time (2004?), and when the explosion happened, it shook the walls of the building and made the lights flicker. If I am not mistaken, Bee Healthy Medical Weight Loss in Lexington has closed. According to their Facebook page, https://www.facebook.com/BeeHealthyLexington/ it appears they may have merged with the new Bee Healthy that opened on Lake Murray Blvd. in Irmo. I do not know their exact address in Lexington, but they were near the Starbucks on 378.
Additionally, while in Lizard's Thicket at Park Road and 378 I overheard one of the waitresses telling another customer that the location will be closed temporarily for renovations. The waitress indicated the renovations would not be as extensive as the one on Elmwood and that they were only expected to be closed for a couple of weeks. I do not know exactly when they will close, however.

HOLD UP!!! I searched your listings for "The Crate" and didn't find it. The Crate was an urban store like Citi Trends that occupied space in Landmark Square down Garners Ferry and then I remember it moved inside Richland Mall for awhile and left there, but you know what. The Epicurean by Al-Amir on Main Street is currently closed for remodeling. Not sure how long it is supposed to last. The sign just said it was closed today, but it was written in such a way that the sign could be set out every day until the remodeling is done.
Additionally, my wife and I noticed the Daufuskeys Gullah Bistro and Piano Bar on Main Street was not open today. Normally they open at 11 AM. I do see an active post on their Facebook page for Thursday night's All-You-Can-Eat Seafood. Does anyone know if they have changed their hours?

WIS listed 5 midlands stores in their report regarding Southeastern Grocers's plans to close underperforming stores.
As noted, Columbia's 3 Harvey's locations are going to be closing.
I never went in any of them after they became Bi-Lo but I did set foot in them at least once while they were still Bi-Lo and over the years I got so where I felt like they were kinda dated...the Widewater Square Bi-Lo (3315 Broad River Road) it seemed like the neighborhood demographics left a lot to be desired.
When the 3 Bi-Los became Harvey's, both the Decker & Widewater Square (3315 Broad River Road) featured here but the N Main one didn't...now we have to prepare for the 3 Harvey's stores to feature here (in due course) as closing as part of the bankruptcy Southeastern Grocers is undergoing (same goes for the Babies R Us at Harbison Court).
Andrew

reading James R's comment prompted me to check and it looke like Harvey's overhaul was done in 2016...only for Southeastern Grocers to close them less than 2 years later. As James pointed out they did undergo the cost of rebranding only to close about 2 years later...
It's just like the Food Lion that used to be Richardson Plaza (543 St. Andrews Road) was remodeled in 2009 only to close in 2013 (but KJ's Market IGA came less than a year later and still has 95%+ of the former Food Lion decor)...
On another lovely note, Garners Ferry's Walmart will be out of commission for the next several days (at least) due to a fire...

The largest radio company in the United States has filed for bankruptcy.
iHeartMedia (formerly Clear Channel) has filed for bankruptcy protection in order to try and secure some relief from an excess of $20 billion in debt on its balance sheets.
"The agreement we announced today is a significant accomplishment," iHeartMedia CEO Bob Pittman is quoted as describing the move, which will reportedly clear more than half of that staggering sum. "It allows us to definitively address the more than $20 billion in debt that has burdened our capital structure."

Has anyone heard what's going on with Richland Mall and if and when it's going to be torn down, or at least some of it? I read where the Columbia Childrens Theater is moving sometime soon and going towards the Cayce/West Columbia side of town. Wish the original Mall had been left alone and maybe remodeled some to make it more "todays" look, but keep the retro 60's style.

@Del, The only thing that is happening is that the Children's Theater will be moving to Cayce before much longer...
I've heard that differnet offices have taken over portions of the mall (making me wonder if perhaps more of the mall is headed in that direction)...
It has been indicated here that a large portion of the mall is owned by a company out of Arizona and it appears to em as if said company has been reluctant to address many of the maintenance needs of the mall...leading me to think that if that's how they are going to be that they need to divest themselves of such property...

I had heard at one time, that it was gonna be torn down except for Belks and a small portion of either the right or left side would be left. But who knows. I know that Mall is falling apart on the inside and in that garage too. I wonder why the Children's Theater is moving out after they moved from upstairs to downstairs and spent all that money in their new place, and now they have to raise money again to move? I wonder about what they were thinking to begin with. Only time will tell what happens with Richland Mall.

Noticed yesterday there was a blank sign at 424 Old Cherokee Road in Lexington. The land has a gravel parking lot and a dirt area with pipes coming out of the ground indicating a building had sat there some time. The building is gone and the best that I can tell from Google Satellite is that a company called Laser House Engraving used to sit here. Superpages lists the address as Bamastone Corporation, and the South Carolina Department of Insurance indicates Sabal Financial Services was here. Apparently, the building had at least 5 suites. Anyone know what happened tot he building. It does not look like it burned. Seems more like the building was relocated.

Any ideas as to what's gonna happen with Columbia Mall? Is Sears now gone away 100%? There was a shoot out/shooting there just recently wasnt there? Seems that Mall has been nothing but trouble since it opened. It was bad enough when I worked there from 1985-1990. With Sears gone, what's there anymore worth the time? The only Mall doing anything now is Columbiana, but that's due to location.

Macy's is the only remaining anchor spot at Columbia Place Mall...there are some shops in the mall itself that are still humming along but I think (based on what others have mentioned) that the numbers continue to dwindle and as I've said before I don't see a major shift considering the neighborhood reputation of Columbia Place Mall...

That place needs to be razed..and gotten rid of..but knowing Columbia or Dentsville or whoever is over the place, it'll sit there til it falls apart.. Dutch Square I think is on its last legs too isnt it? Seems I've seen some more vacant stores towards the front of the place in recent times. Malls are a 70's or 80's things..but Columbiana is still doing right well so far. I worked at Columbiana Mall for 3 years at Musicland..wouldnt do it again though.

When I worked at Outlet Point, many years ago, Hammricks took over one wing and all of the stores in that wing moved to a different part of the mall. I don't see why they couldn't do that with Columbia Mall, move all retail so it's near Macy's and then close the rest of the space down or use it for office space or whatever.
ED
18 Apr 18 at 5:16 pm
-
As I recall the stores in Outlet Pointe Mall started closing up (don't remember too many names) and what happened is that
What would likely happen with Columbia Place Mall in the scenario ED describes is that a large portion of spaces that are vacant would be walled off and made into office suites...I remember seeing proposals to make portions of Dutch Square into some sort of offices as well...

Dutch Square Mall was a hot spot from 1970 through the mid 1980's? I guess..but as time went on, it started to die down, and now you see what's there. Malls are an "am-was" thing of the 70's.. The only exception to the Dead Mall's is Columbia Mall, but that's because of location, location, location. The old Whites/Belk building at Dutch Square Mall is a HUGE store on the inside from what I remember, so no tellin' what's gonna happen to that part of the Mall..

Planet Fitness is finishing a move into a portion of the former Belk at Dutch Square..but still about 2/3 of the old Belk will still be vacant and plus Phillips Edison’s divesture Of Dutch Square has diminished the hope I had for Dutch Square as the Food court welcomed The Crab Shak, Chef T Takeout and Mano’s Express but it remains to see what becomes of the mall as Wes Bolick Bedrooms has closed and West Marine moved to Columbiana Station into a space that originally housed Dress Barn and Shoe Carnival (though neither one of those two has featured here).

The owners of one of the zombie malls here in Atlanta are razing it and going with popular live/work/play model that is everywhere around here. I would love to see that happen to Richland Mall and it would work with Dutch Square due to it's proximity to downtown.
The problem is that no one wants to wants to invest the kind of money needed to do it properly in the Columbia market.
I believe Richland county just bought all but the Macy's anchor stores at Columbia Mall, so razing it isn't in the cards right now.palmettoconnection

@ED -- I know those Grand Strand stores very well, and consider them to be pretty good locations (which explains, I suppose, why Food Lion is willing to buy them). It's kind of sad that Bi-Lo can't make a go of good locations. I suppose there could be non-store factors like not having enough stores left to really support their distribution centers or whatever.
It doesn't augur well for the Litchfield Beach location.
ted
30 Apr 18 at 11:41 pm

@ted, I agree about the Litchfield location, there is way too much competition in that area, between Food Lion, Publix, Lowes and Fresh Market it's going to be hard for Bi-Lo to compete. The only thing Bi-Lo has going for it is it's location since it is north of all of the other stores.
I remember going to Litchfield, way back when, when the only two choices were IGA and the Red and White.

The Gateway Academy Child Development Center in Lexington (5307 Sunset Blvd.) and in Irmo (450 Columbiana Drive) have both been renamed Cadence Academy. Gateway's website says nothing of the name change, but I did see the "seal of excellence" stated Gateways Academies were "Recognized as a Cadence Education School of Excellence". The Barber Shop that Andrew mentions was originally on Hampton Street and the florist was next door. Sears Holdings announced today another round of Sears and K-Marts closings. I looked at the list to see if any in the Columbia area were affected but then realized there weren't any left in Columbia.
Sears locations in Spartanburg and Anderson are on the list which will only leave a Sears in Greenville, Myrtle Beach and Rock Hill in SC.
There are still a handful of "Sears Hometown Stores" in the state and looks like one Appliance Outlet but these can't last too much longer if the big Sears stores can't hang on.

Marks Mens Store was on Main Street from Oct 1963 until June 2017 a total of 54 years. It was first located at 1321 Main St and moved to the last location Jan 1981 which was at 1625 Main St. At closing it was the oldest mens store on Main St. I can send you pictures if you want.

Ed, your mention of Sears in Spartanburg jogged my memory back to 1981. I had completed a couple of calls in NC and was headed home on I-26. A DJ was giving updates on the first space shuttle mission which was to land shortly.
I pulled into the Westgate Mall parking lot and went to the 2nd level of the Sears store where they had all the TVs, and they were all tuned into the network coverage of the landing.
There were a half dozen other guys (I guess they had left their wives to look at washing machines) and some floor salesmen gathered around all the 27" consoles watching the landing of STS-1. We all yelled and shook hands and high fived each other over the successful mission. Good times.
It is a shame that the iconic Sears is passing away.

As Bob Dylan sang " for the times, they are a changin'"...Columbia has changed and will continue to do so. Old buildings and houses will be torn down in the name of "progress"..and some not for the better. I'm sure there are those that will argue that Columbia is better than it used to be, but change doesnt necessarily mean better. As the saying goes " If it aint broke, dont fix it". But Columbia has quite the reputation of tearing down all old things. Downtown quit being downtown in the 1980's when former Mayor Bob Coble changed everything..and it's never been the same. It's like trying to drive a Sherman Tank down a hallway it's so narrow now on Main Street..it's ridiculous.

Some changes are easier to embrace than others...some stores disappear and people don't give them much thought and others people lament in for years after the store closes. This latest report on Sears closing another 72 stores has me thinking about how they keep closing round after round of stores and how I've been lamenting how I miss Kmart that used to be at Seven Oaks Shopping Center. We've discussed plenty of stores of past that people miss...JB White, Tapp's, Piggly Wiggly, Phar Mor, Blockbuster and many more. Plus I know there are people lamenting the loss of Toys R Us.
But then again, there are tradeoffs. I'm not a big Walmart fan but I was happy to see the one at 1326 Bush River Road because it meant new life for a piece of property that had been abandoned for years leading into it and plus the Neighborhood market at 1355 Knox Abbott Drive lead to an intersection upgrade I was happy to see. Woodhill was also another nice overhaul (completed in 2004)
Also of note: Today I noticed that Pier 1 Imports at Sparkleberry Square (10136 Two Notch Road) is closing and folks with liquidation signage were out and about...

Someone posted this previously: It appears Oak Table on Main Street is making some changes. http://www.thestate.com/living/food-drink/article211371499.html
Wonder how long they'll be "undergoing renovations"?Based on the article the Oak Table should be closed by now.
The previous poster is apparently unaware of the reputation of Halls. This isn't a renovation by the current ownership. It has been sold to the owners of Halls Chophouse in Charleston, at one time a Yelp-rated Top 10 restaurant in the entire country. I ate the best steak I have ever had there last year. Their steak supplier is a highly-rated company in Chicago, and you can get the steaks dry-aged (highly recommended). The new place here will be rebranded a Halls Chophouse also. This is a big improvement to the upscale Columbia restaurant market. Will open October 15.

Was riding by the old Brunswick Bowling Lanes today on Broad River, and noticed there's some kind of work or something going on there. Are they tearing it down? or re-purposing it for something else? I personally believe that Columbia (Place) Mall can have a second chance. The stores that are left there now aren't anything exciting, and that's a huge part of the problem, at least in my opinion. One store that seems to be popular nowadays that would work well in either the former Burlington or Steve and Barry's is 2nd and Charles. Every 2nd and Charles I've ever been to has been busy. It may be a long shot, but Belk could theoretically move back into their old location where Dillard's was. The only store I could think of to replace Sears would be Walmart, unfortunately. Then the food court could have places like Chipotle, Zoe's, Taco Bell, and Popeye's. I think malls could have a comeback. I've seen a lot of younger people taking interest in malls and mall culture. That is a good sign

Hey Ted, there was a Deluxe Cleaners next to Egg Roll Express and Cut 'N' Up barbershop at 1807 Decker Blvd. It is empty inside. No idea when it closed. I just saw it was empty the other day. Egg Roll Express is in one building and Deluxe Cleaners and Cut 'N Up is in the building next to it. The cleaners had a drive-thru, so it was on the corner of the building. You can see it on Google Maps.

Columbia Place Mall will never be any good anymore. Not with the youth of today. Seems like all they want to do is fight. Today's youth are so aggressive, especially in packs. The surrounding economy won't be able to support it.
I like the idea of consolidating the county offices in there. It would be less trouble for the low income folks to get their benefits. Right now, they would have to go to the DSS office on Two Notch, the clinic at the admin building on Harden, and other places that I don't know about. 1 bus ride, 1 fare, which we foot most of the fare through the Penny Tax Program. The Food Court would be jumping again. The Food Court should only have local restaurants, no national chains, to help fuel the local economy. They could also put a farmer's market in there (local farmers only) that accepts EBT. They could have job fairs there consistently throughout the year. They could have job training. They already have a play area for the kids. All of this in 1 place. They could still have the stores in there that cater to the low income families. They could bring back the police substation for security. I think it's a great idea. I just think they threw a lot of fluff in the plan that made it just financially impossible to do. Seems to me, someone or some group of people were looking to pad their pockets with this deal.

Malls are dead. They're a thing of the past. The ONLY reason Columbiana Mall does well still, is because of its location. Columbia Mall never did do all that well from the get-go, and now it's a pointless place to go to. Dutch Square Mall's heyday was from 1970 through the late 80's..then it died too. People have gotten tired of Malls and all that walking you have to do to get where you wanna go. I cant see Malls being what they were ever again. I worked at Columbia Mall and Columbia Mall back in the 80's and early 90's, and I wouldnt do it again..too much walking and too many people to deal with. Retail wasnt and isnt a fun thing.

I agree. Columbia Mall was rather nice from the year it opened until around 1985 or so..when all the good stores were still there. But by the early 90's, it was dying..just like Dutch Square Mall. But I had heard that the rent at Columbia was really high, and that's why a lot of businesses left over the years. I worked at Columbia Mall from 1985 through 1990 before going to work at the NEW Columbiana Mall.

The smart move for Richland Mall, would have been to keep the original retro look, but modernize it somewhat. I know it looked the same until 1989 when they started to tear things down there, but a "Fashion" Mall wasnt, and isnt Columbia..never was. Dutch Square isnt that much better off and neither is Columbia Mall. Malls are dead..except for Columbiana, and that's only because of "location, location, location"... if it were to have been built somewhere else, I dont think it would have the success it's had. But only time will tell about Malls in general and what their ultimate fate will be.

The Roses on Beltline Del references is in a former Piggly Wiggly (4033 West Beltline Blvd) and has been there just shy of a year...
The other one is that around 4 years ago Roses opened in a former Kroger at 817 St. Andrews Road.
The best thing I can think of about Roses is that their merchandise is similar to Big Lots except Roses sells apparel where Big Lots doesn't but Roses doesn't sell furniture like Big Lots does.

@ED, I don't think Hardees could maintain the superior quality of their breakfast menu if they served it all day long. It makes sense for, say, McDonalds and Jack in the Box because their breakfast is mediocre. I also don't think Hardees would have the kitchen capacity to make biscuits from scratch all day long alongside their burgers and sandwiches.
@Beth, if Hardees still served the fried chicken that they used to back in the 90s, then it would be a true competition. Still, I'd take Hardees over Chick-fil-A any day of the week. Chick-fil-A wins at Christmas, though, when they serve those peppermint milkshakes. Yum!

Hardees I think first showed up in Columbia in 1966? Over here at Garners Ferry/Ft. Jackson Blvd area..and the one I remember was the one on Knox Abbott Drive. The ones left now are horrible on their customer service, that I'm surprised they're still around. They never get any orders right, and you have to wait for a ridiculous amount of time to get waited on and get your order.

From Ted's written Mission Statement: "This blog is (mostly) about businesses in Columbia, SC which have closed."
"In general, this blog will deal, as the title suggests, with Columbia SC. However, I also spend a good deal of time on the Grand Strand, so I won’t hesitate to mention closings there, if it strikes my fancy."
Don't y'all think it might be best to respect the man, his blog and its stated purpose by confining discussion to closings in the Columbia area?

Folks,
I have been letting things play out because I like to see enthusiasm and people talking to each other, but let's keep it at a low roar.
1) If you have asked your question several times and nobody answers, then probably nobody knows the answer.
2) If I see something that interests me wherever I happen to be, I may post about it, but I am unlikely to drive 70 miles to take a picture of a closed fast food building.
Just saying.

I tried to say this gently, yesterday, but apparently I did not get through. If you have a closing you want to mention, mention it ONCE. I will see it and I may or MAY NOT blog about it. Other folks with information may also talk about it. If you have information that something I said is wrong, put it on the page for THAT CLOSING. Hopefully I will get around to fixing it, but if not, at least it will be in the appropriate comment page for people coming in later to see.

A gentleman named Ted initiated this web site at least back in 2009. He grew up in Columbia and enjoyed many cherished memories at locations in the area. He was also a photo aficionada and made photos of many of these locations. He cared enough about others that he developed this web site and placed the photos there so that others could enjoy them. There was an article about him recently in a local publication and he never sought fame or fortune from this, he just wanted to be a good friend.
Unfortunately, some who are inconsiderate and selfish have begun posting to this site with inappropriate and ridiculous comments. It is sad that those would so something like that which precludes the enjoyment of so many others.

Furthermore, I can second Ken's notion that the Applebee's at 2344 Broad River Road has closed up shop...

Does anyone other than me who's old enough, remember a drive-in theater on Sumter Highway/Garners Ferry back in the 60's to early 70's (it was closed by then). I think it was past and not too from the old Marion Burnside Dealership going towards Sumter. There was a Plantation style house with large Columns on the front..but it looked abandoned and the screen was falling apart. I think too there was still what was left of the Marquee. I cant remember the name of the place or what years it would have been in operation. Anyone know?

I remember that one ( I went to it a few times), I remember the Beltline location, Sunset Drive In, the one over on two notch past the old Atlantic Dept. Store, the one at the Fairgrounds, sort of remember the one over in West Columbia on the Augusta Hiway, but this one was going towards Sumter..we used to pass it on the way up towards that way. I know it was past Marion Burnside, but dont remember where now..couldnt miss it. But this would have been in the late 60's and it was closed before then. I wish I had a list of Drive In's in the Columbia area and a little past to see if I remember it..but I dont off hand. It was going towards McEntire AFB or even Shaw AFB..but I know it was before you got to Sumter, and was on the left side of the road next to some big old house.

All I remember, is that was a big two story house with columns on the front and an old drive in screen that was sort of falling apart and worn with the old broken marquee that was near the road. The glass on it was cracked and missing in places. Could have been near where Walmart is now on GF Road. Used to come up Atlas Road, turn right where McDonalds is now, and it was up the road from there somewhere going towards Sumter..could have been past Twin Lakes or just before in a big open field/property area big enough to park cars for the drive-in.. but that was back in the late 60's. Could have been past McEntire AFB or before you get there too..but not sure now.

But whatever the name is or where it was on the old Sumter Hiway, it was already closed, overgrown, broken marquee, the screen was sort of falling apart, and the house was I'm sure empty. I had heard the owner of the place/house either killed someone or was killed on the front porch of the house or something like that..or so I heard. But as said, this would have been the late 60's when Coble Milk was on the corner of Shop Road and Atlas in the 60's before it went out of business.

What was the name of the tourist trap/giftshop a few miles outside Florence on the way to the beach? I think it's been boarded up for a few years. For some reason I'm thinking it was called Jimmy Carter's. Have you done a closing on this place Ted? Thank you
Andy Farmer
21 Aug 18 at 12:08 pm

Yeah, I remember that. It was in the median of US-76 between Florence & Marion. It was Jimmy Carter's when I first noticed it, with a big grinning caricature face of that president. Then I think it was a strip club, then some sort of adult emporium and now vacant. I think the facade of the adult place fell off recently and the Jimmy Carter's signage was visible again. Maybe I'll take a picture the next time I drive that way in the daytime.

Jackson's Southern Kitchen on Sunset in West Columbia is closed. It appears the owner wasn't paying all the tax he owed. The same group owned The Southern Skillet at the same location and got shut down for tax evasion also.
And for a footnote the same group also owned Vegetable Medley in Lexington that got shut down for (all together now) Tax Evasion. Man these people make some great food but they surely don't like to pay the tax man.

The Coldwell banker Real Estate Office at 5140 Sunset Blvd. has closed. According to the Coldwell Banker website located at https://www.coldwellbanker.com/south-carolina-real-estate-brokers?src=hp that means Columbia, SC is being serviced out of their Charlotte, NC office. Yellow Pages (yp.com) still shows them at 5599 Sunset Blvd., but they moved out of that location a couple of years ago when they moved into 5140. It almost sounds like the agency was in a downhill slide for a couple of years and finaly just closed up shop. Yellow Pages also had a listing for them at 5551 Sunset, but that is a dentist office and cell phone repair store.

My gut tells me that developers (behind the scenes) have tried to do things to breathe new life into both malls but they've never gotten much traction and that the details never evolved to the point of becoming public...

@Del- according to previously published reports, the biggest hurdle the developers at Richland Mall is facing is the parking garage. Potential tenants are telling them they want the garage removed before they move in because it obstructs the view of the mall from the street, however the mall owner does not want to tear it down.

I agree with the other tenants of Richland Mall..you cant see the Mall because of that atrocity of a Parking Garage. It took up all the room that was there originally before the new Mall was built, and I dont trust how well it's made. But if the owner doesnt wanna tear it down, it's his own business...but he's hurting what little business is still there. I personally hate going there when I have to..it's a pain in the rear for sure. Columbia has made some really stupid decisions over the years, but they dont seem to learn from them.

Kline Iron and Steel closed before ted started his blog, but was a big part of Columbia and West Columbia for 80 years.
The University of South Carolina has put together an online history with numerous photographs and interviews.

I don't know if this is just something special that was done for Kline or if it is part of a series, but it would be great if the University planned to do more of these online exhibits about businesses that had large impacts on our community.

The Free Times reports that The Garden Bistro has closed. I used to love the original hidden one - the atmosphere and employees were cool and the food was great. Speaking of Kline Steel with the family still owning the property, it's like the Gibb family selling out to USC, when I had heard for a long time they werent going to tear the old part down and refused to sell out to USC. But as we all know, USC always wins out. Everyone has their selling price, and if USC wants it, USC usually gets it. I think it's a matter of time before the Kline Family sells out to them too. But we'll see.

For all of us older people on here, who remembers the "O.K" Used Car lot that used to be on the corner of Blossom and Assembly going towards the top of the hill? Del

Del is correct that Gibbes was at the corner of Blossom and Assembly. The O.K. lot was where Gibbes had their used cars located. Nix VW was on Belt Line Blvd. After Nix vacated there Dodgeland of Columbia was in the same location. The Wray family, who at one time was involved with Pulliam Ford, eventually got the VW dealership and it remains located on the hill on Broad River Road between the bridge and Greystone. I believe the Wray family may no longer be involved and it is under a new name now.

There is something going on at Levi's Lake House (formerly Bentleys, formerly The Dam Bar and Grill). Twice this week ive driven by around 730 PM and the place is closed and there are a bunch of work vans outside. Their Facebook is no longer showing on the first page of Google searches, i had to go to the third page of results to find it. And even then it was just a link to a single post that allowed me to click on thru to the main page. The FB was updated pretty much daily until Oct 26, and then nothing since.
Maybe they are doing some renovations? Or did they have a fire or something? Another divorce? Tornado? Flood? Volcano?

IrmoJeff - Please take this for what it's worth but word around the Facebook is that the person that owns the Levi's property raised the rent so the current owners left and it will be opened under a new name shortly. Some say it will be a steakhouse which doesn't bode well, as it will probably soon join the ranks of Daddy Mac's, Mr. D's, Ryan's, Golden Coral, Quincy's and Prime.

Besides charging high rents the landlord had a crazy policy where the water bill was covered in the rent with a $75 handling charge. Given the fact their water bill was only $6 a month they understandably felt it was a rip off. This was one of the reason they closed shop

Tom, I had forgotten about that tiny little store. Papa Jazz used to be good at one time, but not impressed with their cheap prices in cash Non Beatles Lp's..and then you really dont get much for those either. I miss X-Records that Ron Marsh used to have in 5 points in the 80's. School Kids records was the only other one to give Ron some competition. But things dont stay the same unfortunately. I guess that shows my age since I grew up in the age of vinyl lp's 45's and 78's.

Speaking of Manifest Records, when they/it used to be on North Main St. , didnt it occupy the old Hippie/Anti Establishment hang out The UFO? Or was that next to them? I dont remember now because it's been a long time ago. Carl Singmaster who started the place seemed cordial to me, but when he left Columbia, Manifest went down hill and never really did all that good after they moved. I'm curious what's gonna take its place when they close? I dont know who is/was worse when it came giving one a cash deal when you sold your old vinyl lp's and things. Papa Jazz is cheap, but I think Manifest is more-so.

and once again speaking of Manifest and other am-was Record Stores, there was Budget Records and tapes across from USC on Green St, and The Prism in Charleston on King Street that was owned/run by Billy/Fred Arnold. When Rich originally ran Papa Jazz, I think there was a better selection of Vinyl, and the same goes for Carl Singmaster when he was running Manifest on North Main. But things change and dont stay the same. I'm from the record crowd of the late 70's and early 80's, so I remember a lot of places that dont exist now.

It was Meri's Record Shop.
I can only recall buying two records there, both 45 singles:
Honkin' Down The Highway by the Beach Boys, which was certainly not the best song off the Love You album, and did not chart.
and
Green Plant by Majic Ship on The Tokens BT Puppy label and produced by The Tokens. I have no idea why this was in the shop as it was apparently released in 1968 (and went nowhere) and it would have been years later that I found it.
Meri's also had a space in Belk's in Columbia Mall and this is where I found Jan & Dean's "Gotta Take That One Last Ride" a double LP with a number of (at the time) rare tracks.

Meri's was a great record shop and it always seemed to be well organized. I used to like to pick up the weekly WCOS top 40 listings there.
Does anyone recall another record store on South Main just a block from the capitol building? They operated there in the late 70s.
How many people gave their record collection a shot in the arm with the 11 records for a penny deal through the Columbia Record Club?

Oh man, Columbia House Record Club!
I bit that loss leader. Sure those penny records were fine, and the actual record prices for the remainder that you had to buy to live up to your enrolement commitment weren't awful (they weren't a fantastic bargain either), but the shipping charges just ate you up and made it an *awful* deal on an ongoing basis. I'm not sure you ever really came out ahead, but certainly not if you stayed in the club after your initial period. But getting out was hard. I think I was still getting "Please come back" letters ten years after quitting.

What a shame Manifest is closing. I remember when they opened one on Ashley Blvd in N. Charleston near Citadel Mall in the late '80s. As a kid though growing up in NE Columbia in the '70s and '80s we mostly went to Record Bar in Columbia Mall, Sounds Familiar, one I can't remember that was in Decker Mall. I want to say that Kroger Sav-On at Decker Mall also sold records and is where I bought Motley Crue's "Shout at the Devil". Maybe it was Gold Circle (precursor to Target with ugly dark brown and gold colors) at Decker Mall, but I want to say Kroger.
Musicland sucked and was always over priced.
Peaches in 5 points always seemed overpriced too, but how many of you have their wooden record holder crates with the Peaches logo on it.
I remember taping a penny to the Columbia House record club application and mailing it off with my selections. It was like Christmas when that package arrived.palmettopanic

Mungo, which builds houses in eight markets in South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Alabama, sold more than 1,800 homes in 2017 and is projected to close on approximately 1,900 homes in 2018, according to a news release.
Clayton Properties Group, which builds in 11 states, is on pace to build more than 4,200 homes this year, the release said. Mungo is the eighth acquisition for the company and third in 2018.

I can see that (Ruby Tuesday closing). They have another a few miles down the street but don't have any on the Northeast side of town. Not that I would go if there was one. I don't care for their food. But I could see them moving into the old O'Charley's building on Two Notch.
OAN, I wish Outback would open up in Sandhills in the old Arizona's building. The one on Two Notch has gone downhill so much in the last few years.

Sidney, how has it gone down hill if they just renovated it. Instead of moving it to Sandhill, why don't you voice your concerns to corporate so others can have a great experience.

Quick Stop & Go III at the corner of St.Andrews and Piney Grove has been razed along with a couple of other businesses. I don’t remember what thise other businesses were though. I think one was a auto repair shop. It sat beside/behind the Qucik Stop & Go III facing Piney Grove.

James R, the demolition of the Quick Stop & Go III has been mentioned in the Seven Oaks Auto Repair & Tires page as that is one the buildings impacted by all of this (details as to what is coming soon to this site have been mentioned there)...
Manifest's closing was mentioned a few weeks back as well (but hasn't featured here yet)...

ColumbiaGuy - the service (not the physical appearance) has gone down. Me and my friends used to go there every Friday and Saturday night for about 2 years. Service was always quick. The last time I went (a few weeks ago) the service was slow, the shrimp (all you can eat) was not cold but it wasn't warm either. The drinks took forever and there wasn't many people at the bar. The issue that night with the drinks was that the bartender was talking too much to the servers. My friends that used to go with me had the same experience the last few times they went also.
I voiced my opinion to the manager and the young lady didn't get my usual 20% tip and I told her why.

The headline in yesterday's edition of The State read "Popular Columbia taco shop shuttering its doors", referring to the White Duck Taco Shop.
Three paragraphs down the kitchen manager stated "If we get enough people in here to pay the bills to stay open, we'll stay open. But as of right now, we don't have it."
So just how popular could it be?

Columbia Appliance & Service at 8708 Two Notch Road appears to be closing. Most of the stock is gone and a sign indicates the building is for lease.

I don't know about everyone else, but if I see that a restaurant is "shuttering its doors", I am not going to go out of my way to try it. If the owner is really hoping to stay open, that headline did a real disservice.

There's a lot of people that try and start up, or "run" somekind of store or food store/fast food, or small business, but if they dont posses a business mind, or dont know how to promote and advertise their particular business, then it will fail eventually. It's also about Location, Location, Location. Do research on your demographics and areas around town before you build or whatever. But when you dont have faith in your own thing, then it's a waste of money, time and effort. There's been a lot of failed things here in Columbia over the years due to various reasons, but that's life.

God’s Blessing Cafe at 1801 Main Street (Jefferson Square -followip to The Palmetto Hrill and The Lunch Box) will close at the end of business today (December 21). They also run a catering business under the same name. I do not know if the catering business will remain open or not.

The Vegetable Medley on Oak Dr in Lexington has closed after many years. According to the sign on the door. The closure is because of "tax issues'. And that the restaurant will return.
