Varsity / D'Jasz / JS Renee, 1212 Sunset Drive: June 2014 6 comments
Hungry hungry hippo..
I've always wondered if this little diner by the North Main Sonic was originally connected with the old North Main Street Varsity Restaurant.
While the Varsity name and pennant have always been there as far as I can recall, J S Renee is fairly recent. Back in the 90s and until sometime in the 2000s, the sub-marquee was D'Jasz which apparently also had a location on Rosewood.

I think I am a couple of years younger than Rick so I have no recollection of the North Main Varsity or Doug Broome's except for a couple of cousins of mine that are about 10 years older than me. I do have a picture somewhere of Doug Broome's advertising a Sunday special of a half chicken dinner for 89 cents. Those were the days....

@Rick - give me the scoop on the Reminisce magazine. It seems like something that may interest me....

@Homer - Reminisce Magazine claims to be entirely reader written and for the most part it is. It's the magazine that "Brings back the good times" Subscribers send in photos of just about anything from the past with stories about the photos.
A one year subscription is about $17.99. However it comes every other month, six magazines. One can subscribe to Reminisce Extra which comes in in on the months the regular magazine does not. I really enjoy reading it. My description here really does not do it justice, check it out online.Rick

It looks like a new restaurant is going to be opening in this location soon.

This place looks sort of like of the Dino's Restaurant closing Ted put up recently. Only in worse condition.
I'm just barely to young to remember places like the Varsity on North Main and places like Doug Broomes.
I often wish I could go back in time to see places like that.
And with that said, it is one of the reasons I enjoy Columbia Closings. I also subscribe to a magazine called Reminisce.
Anyone not familiar with it should check it out.
