C & V's Sports Cafe / Element, 201 Columbia Mall Boulevard Suite 221: 2012 9 comments
At one time this corner storefrong in Capitol Centre was one of my favorite restaurants Cucos Mexican Cafe. I believe it's been more since then than the two businesses I currently have on the post title, C & V's Sports Cafe and Elements, but that's all that google is coming up with for me now.
Anyway, I noticed on my last drive through that it is empty again, and is due shortly to become a Bingo hall.

Have you tried the Real Mexican Restaurant across from the Burger King on Bush River Road? It has a 94% "likes" on urbanspoon.com. I've never eaten there but the reviews are very positive.

@Rick -- Columbia has never been able to get and/or keep national Mexican restaurants (set aside the question whether they are "good"). Cucos came and went, Don Pablo's went, Garcia's went, El Chico has now gone and we never had Chi-Chi's, Chevvy's, Rio Bravo, Abuelo's or On The Border.
@Mike -- Meh. Real Mexico just seemed like more of the same Mexican staffed Mexican restaurant to me. Certainly no worse than San Jose / La Fogata / El Monerrey / Casa Linda, but not noticably better.

You want real Mexican food, try the food trucks on Decker Blvd. The tacos are the BOMB!! A little expensive, but damn good!! Knowing how to speak Spanish will help with your order but not knowing Spanish won't stop you from getting some good food.

There are a couple of 'real' Mexican restaurants around. But they cater to (mainly) real Mexican/Hispanic residents, so unless you speak Spanish you might be lost, since a lot of times the staff has limited English skills.

Every other city that has national chain Mexican restaurants can keep them, honestly. It was always a sad afternoon when one of my work friends decided we were going to El Chico's for lunch. Don Pablo's was the only one of the big chains I half-enjoyed, and that one only because they'd bring out flour tortillas with the queso dip. All of their menus had been focus-grouped to death and tasted like they had been prepared by someone who had once read a short article about what Mexican food tasted like.

@Sidney- I pass one of the trucks I believe you are talking about on Percival Road once a week, when I'm traveling south on I-77 on my way home from work, I stop at the Shell gas station at the corner of Percival and I-77. I go to that Shell to use my BI-LO Fuel Perks Bonus Card for a discount on gas. I then take Percival back to Decker and get back on I-77.
I have thought about stopping but, I have never purchased food off of a truck before and have been reluctant to do so until now. Maybe I'll give them a try.@Mike- I live out Garners Ferry Road past the VA hospital and do not get over to Bush River very often. I visit my Dad from time to time who lives in Irmo, maybe the next visit I make, we'll try Real Mexican. I have driven further than that for good Mexican so if it "Rates" then I'll be happy.
@Ted- You appear to know your Mexican Restaurants, you mention several I have never even heard of. I'll look them up to see if there are any you mentioned in the many cities I travel to for work. I may be biased but, I still say the best I remember in Columbia was El-Menchaca. As I'm sure you know, there is a thread for them on your site.
San Jose, Monterrey, Casa Linda, Eric's San Jose, They all taste the same to me.

There is one on Percival and there are 2 on Decker. I have been to the 2 on Decker before but never the one on Percival. It's just when I am in the mood for those tacos, I am usually on Decker. So I am not saying anything bad about the one on Percival.

I used to go to Eric's San Jose every week. Until I saw a roach crawling across the bar. It's been about 4 years since I went there. I am also right around the corner from the one on Hardscrabble. I have seen Eric (owner of Eric's San Jose) at Sakura for lunch several times. He asked me why I don't come to his place anymore and I just told him because I live in the Summit now.

@Ted- Speaking of Mexican restaurants, I have been unable to find a Mexican restaurant that appeals to me,
I like Taco Cid in comparison to Taco Bell but, what happened to the really good restaurants?
I see where people really go on and on about San Jose and the other restaurants in town with similar names but, to me, I just do not care for them.
I have been to Tex Mex Restaurants in Texas that ROCK.
Why is it that Columbia does not have a really kick A$$ Mexican restaurant like I have been to in other towns?
I believe people in Columbia have no idea what really good Mexican food can taste like. If someone would open a good restaurant here it would make a killing $$$$.
Hmmm.... I have been looking for another business but, I have no idea how to create a slamming Mexican raunt.
