Sound Advice, 1561 Broad River Road: 2011 5 comments
Here's another Boozer Shopping Center storefront, and an interesting busines story.
Assuming that the Sound Advice whose site is here is the same one (and I think it is), then the history of the chain is here. The first store opened in 1974 and it sounds like the original owners decided to sell out and move to Florida around 2004. After that (according to them) the new owners ran things into the ground and then the original owners bought the remnants back in a fire-sale and are now running mostly online with some showrooms in Florida.

I knew about them from the car audio side of things. They always had much higher-quality equipment for sale than, say, Circuit City or Best Buy. The people working there seemed a lot more knowledgeable, but I seem to recall it was commission-based sales so I always hated going in there.
With Crutchfield (and later Amazon) I got to where I just didn't need a place like this anymore. I might have gone into one once in a while to showroom some equipment, but the days of me spending money there were long past.

@Homer - I can remember going in to Sound Advice maybe two times. If I remember correctly it was on one of my "Check out the competition" excursions.
I seem to remember they were a higher end type of audio store with a rather small selection, and brands that did not appeal to me at the time.
This was back in the day of the Laser Disc, remember the Laser Disc? They were very much like todays DVD's but the size of a album.I thought they had a great name.

I went there to get my Paradigm speaker fixed. I was re-wiring and stupidly forgot to turn off the amplifier. The result was a woofer cone blown right out of its magnet, the coils melted. When I took it to them and the guy examined it he called to the other workers in the store to assemble around.
They looked at the damage and in unison, looked back up to me with awe, and asked; "What were you listening to?"
Didn't have the heart to tell them it was CNN.
They fixed it though. I'm pretty sure that was back in the early 90s.

Isn't this the old Heroes & Dragons location? Before they moved across Boozer, next to Manifest; before they moved down the street next to the old library?

@Rick - this post sounds like one that you could comment on. Considering your varied background, what do you know (if anything) about Sound Advice? I remember the store, but they always (at the time) catered to people that seemed to be more of audiophiles than me.
