Well, just to continue our ongoing list of Pig closings, the store in Litchfield Beach is now gone.
This was a fairly new store, and quite nice. It also seemed to always do quite a good business as far as I could tell.
The store is located in a plaza just across US-17 from the main Litchfield resort area (with the old Tara Theater) and has a number of restaurants and a few retail operations. There has been some churn during the financial crisis, and Blockbuster, a computer store and a couple of others have gone, but Massey's Pizza and Eggs Up have moved in, so on the whole it is doing OK. Physically the site is quite nice, with moss draped live-oaks and stop-light access.
The Pig will be re-opening as a Bi-Lo, and I have to think that this will mean moving the Bi-Lo from a few blocks north into this spot. Currently the Bi-Lo (originally built as a Harris Teeter) is in an older, failing plaza, which has recently seen the only other decent store (Litchfield Books) decamp to the new Fresh Market complex.
All of this movement takes place in the total revamping of the local grocery environment. Along with the newly opened and afore-mentioned Fresh Market, the Grand Strand's first Publix will be opening in the currently dowdy Pawleys Island Plaza, and a Lowe's Foods will be opening in a new plaza at the Island's South Causeway. This has to be putting a good deal of pressure on Food Lion which has been running a rather up-scale location also at the South Causeway.
(*) All the online google hits list this location as Pawleys Island. In my mind that is clearly wrong. This is Litchfield Beach, plain and simple. Somehow the area covered by the Pawleys Island moniker has tended to spread as "Arrogantly Shabby" has become "upscale" and gained a bit of cachet.

Right. That's just the mailing address, which doesn't always coincide nicely with a physical or municipal name (e.g. Arcadia Lakes and Forest Acres, both municipalites using Columbia mailing addresses).

Bi-lo also bought the Pig on Hwy 1 in West Columbia just to get the lease. They closed it to eliminate the competition. It is NOT reopening as a Bi-lo. -They took away the only grocery store between I-26 and Lexington - Bastards

now it open as bi-lo i was down in myrtle beach couple weekends ago and we stopped by on our way back to summerville it was nice remodel bi-lo but i cant belive they want to just up and abandon there current store to put in a new remodeled one i think they should of just remodled the bulding they where in and sold that pig to some one elese

Ted - It appears you go to the coast quite often, do you guys have a place there?
From the time I was one year old until I was 15 years old, my family would rent a "Cottage" as Mom and Dad called it, right on the beach in Garden City or Surfside.
Those were some of the best days of my life. We would stay for a week, Saturday to Saturday. This was back when there were no Condo's, Big hotels, etc.
The place to go for a youngster my age was the pier, both Garden City and Surfside had amusement rides and open air arcades at the time. To this day I still remember the smells and hear the sounds. I got some of the best sleep in my life there, windows open in the cottage, hearing the sounds, the smells and the freash ocean air.
Once I turned 16 I started going with my girl friends.

Shortly after I married, and going into business for ourselves, my wife and I would go to the coast almost every weekend during the summer. We would take out early on Friday's and stay until Monday mornings, leaving to drive back into Columbia at 4:00a in order to open the store at 9:00a, and then work all day.
Damn, we had all the energy in the world back then.
After my son was born in 1991 we continued to go each year for a week at a time, always renting an "Older" cottage such as the ones I stayed in as a youngster. Then in 1996 for some reason, we quit going. I believe, as my wife does, that the coast of SC is nothing like it once was, we had been so many times and just grew tired of the way things had changed. It saddens me that things have changed so much.

IIRC Litchfield doesn't have its own post office so you get a Pawleys Island mailing address.
