Ethel's Uniforms, 1620 Broad River Road: 2012 5 comments
I have noticed this old fashioned little house across Broad River Road from Boozer Shopping Center off and on over the years, and have suspected for a while that Ethel's Uniforms was closed, something I recently verified by stopping by, and finally remembering to check the phonebook. It seems to me that the place may have closed earler than 2012, but it is listed up to that point, so that's what I'm going with.
This property valuation suggests that the house was built in 1930, and that sounds about right from the look of it. There are lots of old houses like this on Broad River road, and it's hard to imagine the rural setting they must have been built in. Looking at the listed owner of the property, suggests that the original "Ethel" may have sadly passed away though I hope that is not the case.
The real estate sign and this LoopNet listing suggests the Ethel's building may be part of the surrounding strip mall property.

I did a lot of business with Ethel's in the 80s and it was always a top notch operation. Great people.

Ethel was my Mom & she passed away in 2011. We're trying to sell the property which includes the property where the screen printing business is located, but with the economy being what it is, this has been a hard sell.

It is a real shame that house will never be restored to its original form. I see so many older houses like this, trundling away to their appointment with the excavator because the land they sit on is so valuable, and they have no future for use on land that has obviously gone commercial.
Likewise, I see many abandoned homes that sit in once nice but now crime riddled neighborhoods. No one will invest in the home cuz the hood sucks.
If I ever win the lottery, I think I'm going to buy property far out in the country and move old houses out there to restore. Maybe old buildings, too. Just a community made of renovated old building. It'd be cool, and make me happy.
