There's something nice and very Americana about a place Where all your tractor needs are met! with a classic business counter like the one seen through the front door here. Not to mention the old-time stairstep roof facade.

Unfortunately, there's one less downtown now..

  1. Sad to see this. They have been in business as long as I can remember.

  2. Looks like they still have a 3400 Ford, a winnow and an aceload of bush hogs.

I think this has been Fairfield Tractor all my life, but I saw a photo in one of the USC digital collections for a Columbia Tractor company. I wonder if there was a name change in the distant past.

  3. Regarding my above post, it looks like a different building.

  4. The only think I remember about this building was that it had a blue box removed from the front sidewalk as plenty of other have been removed as well...

  5. I always thought that Fairfield Tractor was originally on Shop (or Bluff) Rd and it was a much larger establishment that what is pictured here. Maybe I'm mistaken.

  6. Fairfield Tractor Co. has a long history, going back almost 100 years. It began in Winnsboro, SC as a division of Fairfield Motor Company (chartered in September 1915) which also operated retail Ford automobile dealerships in Winnsboro and Rock Hill. It was founded as one of many business enterprises by Spencer R. McMaster, Sr. of Winnsboro (died 12-23-1980) who spun it off as a separate company in 1940, at which time it opened its branch in Columbia with additional branches in Newberry and Leesville. It flourished in service initially to the small farmer with the introduction of the very affordable Fordson Model F tractor in 1917 and it continued expanding with each new model of Ford tractors which dominated the U.S. tractor market for decades. Fairfield Tractor has remained in the McMaster family since its beginning. At its closing on April 8 of 2013, it had operated from the Assembly Street site for over 72 years, and had enjoyed dedicated service to many generations in Fairfield, Richland, Lexington, Newberry, Saluda and Kershaw counties.
