Well, this one is a shame as I used to go in here all the time back when I was shooting film, and always found the staff friendly and helpful. (I'm sure they would have told me to never shoot against the sun as I had to in the front-on daytime picture!)

Of course, I found that after I went digital, I went in there much less often, and I think that applied to many other shutterbugs as well.

I would still go in to use the nice large format printer if I wanted to have something framed, but generally that was only a couple of pictures a year, which is not enough to offset the loss of the film business.

UPDATE 26 Feb 2013 -- As reported by commenter Justin, this place is to become an Ace Hardware (though it seems a bit small to me):

  1. This was a Wolf Camera until Ritz bought Wolf. And, it seems to me that back in the 1980s this might have been some kind of wine store? Never went into it, but that's what it seemed like to me.

  2. Are there any Ritz/Wolf stores left in Columbia?

  3. No, the whole company closed nationwide

  4. They are currently down to 18 store locations nationwide.

The closest to us are in Atlanta and Huntersville, NC

Other southeast locations are in Germantown, TN; Homewood, AL and Virginia Beach.

Then you have 3 in the DFW metroplex as well as a 4th Tx. location in San Antonio

  5. I think I went here exactly once when I needed something printed large-format the same day (otherwise I use a web service). This was probably two years ago, if not more, and I found their gear prices to be insanely high - it's like they charged MSRP, even though by then B&H and Adorama had a strong online presence and sold for much lower. I never had occasion to go back, and it looks like I wasn't the only one.

I did happen into their South Park Mall location a month or so ago to see what their final sale looked like. Their "deep discounts" were almost to the dollar what I can get from those other two stores I mentioned any day of the week. Needless to say, I left empty-handed.

  6. Not sure what is going on here right now but a bunch of work has begun on the building in the last week or so. Looks like a new business will be located in this building fairly soon.

  7. This location is now open as an ACE Hardware.

  8. Jason's indication that Ritz has closed their South Park Mall location in Charlotte now means that if you want to go to Ritz Camera, you'd have to drive to Atlanta or Virginia Beach...

You could also go to Homewood, AL (near BHM) and there are two locations in Maryland (Bethesda and Towson) and another in the Chicago suburb of Northbrook, IL. Further locations are in the DFW metroplex, San Antonio, Riverside (CA), Salt Lake City, Porland (OR) and Bellevue (WA)...

  9. Same fella that ran Ritz runs the ACE Hardware. I told him I admired his entrepreneurial spirit. He didn't seem eager to chit chat about it though.
