Abbot's Texaco, 504 Percival Road: 1980s   11 comments

Posted at 12:23 am in closing

I think Walker's Service Center remains in business while they try to sell the building (which to my memory has been on the market for years), but obviously they were not the first tenant here in what was a service station of some sort.

The architecture is distinctive enough that I ought to be able to name it easily, but in the event it's slipping my mind, and I will update the post title when either someone identifies it, or I remember to look it up at the library. These full service gas stations use to be just about the only ones you saw, and with cars so much more fragile in those years, that made sense. Now they are a dying breed, and with the closure of Forest Lake Exxon I can only think of a few left in town.

UPDATE 23 February 2012: Updated post title from "Gas Station" to "Abbot's Texaco" based on the comments.

UPDATE 13 June 2017 -- Now Pete's Mobile Auto & Truck Repairs:

  1. The red and black of the self service sign screams Texaco... Dont know whether that was the original operation though...

  3. Definately a Texaco in the 1970s. During that decade Texaco and Esso altered their stations to make them look like houses for some reason.

  4. I'm pretty sure this was Mr. Abbots Texaco station. He retired from the army in the early 70's and opened this full service station. He had two sons that worked there on and off - I went to school with his son Jimmy, and his wife worked with my mother in the cafeteria at Forest Lake Elementary. When they rationed gas back in the 70's, this was the only place my Dad could get gas, cause he and Mr. Abbot were buddies.

    I'll update the post title.

  6. I noticed today there's an "Abbott's Auto Care" in a little blue building on Percival (slightly north of Decker). I wonder if it's the same family.

  7. back in the 80's in need a car inspection sticker. I went by there and asked if they would inspect my car. They said no. So, I never went back again. I'm glad we don't have to do that inspection sticker crap anymore.

  8. I knew a Gary Abbott. His family ran the gas station on Decker, across from the Old Red Carpet. I do believe when he left there, he may have open a place on Percival Rd.

  9. I used to ride my bike to this gas station from my neighborhood off Woodvine Rd. when I was in 1st grade to buy cigarettes for my mom. I don't recall anyone ever asking me who they were for. They just gave me change, so I could use the cigarette machine.

  10. I didn't see this closing listed! Hoolligan's at Trenholm Plaza closed after many successful years. I will go by and take some pictures and post them here!
