This fish market at 3939 Beltline Boulevard isn't on the phonebook list above, but was clearly a Dairy Queen at one time:
Actually the ad lists a lot more Dairy Queens in town than I was aware of back in the day. The one I remember was the one on Forest Drive at Percival Road, about where the oil-change place is now. I'm not even sure we ever stopped there -- after Bell's closed, we were more of a McDonald's family as far as fast-food burgers went back then.
The main reason I remember this Dairy Queen was because of the national ad campaign featuring Hank Ketchum's Dennis The Menace. Dennis was one of the comics I always read in The State, so it really caught my attention when he and his pal "Joey" started doing radio spots for Dairy Queen. Most of them were not that memorable, but there was one where Dennis & Joey were discussing all the "brazier" treats that it was possible to get at Dairy Queen in those days, and Joey delivered the line
Yeah, Dennis, like a super-brazier chilli-dog!
so memorably that it became sort of a catch-phrase with my friends. Almost any conversation could be punctuated by dropping Yeah Dennis, like a super-brazier chilli-dog! into a lull.
I'm not sure what happened to the Forest Drive Dairy Queen. I have it in my mind that it may have burned down, but I know that happened to the very nearby Forest Drive Pizza Hut, so I may be confusing the two stores. At any rate, the whole brazier thing which was supposed to propel DQ into the top ranks of fast food joints didn't really work, Dennis The Menace or no, and the chain exists today under much reduced circumstances.

The building for the one at 1366 Rosewood still stands. I think it's a day labor employment service. The barn-like left side used to have the DQ logo on it.
On a recent visit to Myrtle Beach, I did spot one DQ on Kings Highway near the old air base.

DQ has never rebounded here in the Southeast, but in other areas of the country, like the Midwest, DQ has always been alive and well. Just one of those regionalisms, I suppose.
There are a couple of fast food chains that retreated from the Mid-Atlantic and Southeast but are still thriving... like Jack-in-the-Box...

I grew up in the St. Andrews area, and am very familiar with a lot of the places that used to be there. I vaguely remember this, but have no idea where it could have been. Anybody? I wish that they would have listed their street address like the other locations, but I guess St. Andrews Road did not have many businesses, and if you drove on St. Andrews, you'd find it eventually. Now you have companies who have multiple businesses on St. Andrews Road (Food Lion, Kroger, McDonald's, etc)

McDonalds sits about where DQ was on St. Andrews Road. Does anyone also remember across the street from McDonalds "Perkins" Restaraunt? I used to work there.. it's now or was a Christian Bookstore, but it looks about the same.

That DQ on St. Andrews was about the only place if not the only place to eat there back in the late 60's to early 70's. There also used to be a pond just past the DQ on the right side of the road about where that strip mall sits now..where Sandy's Hotdogs and others are/was. Too bad we dont have any DQ's here in town anymore..the closest thing left would be the Dairy Bar on Rosewood.

The DQ building on Sunset in West Columbia still stands. The last time I went there when it was still a DQ was in 1983.

The DQ on Sunset was opened until at least 1997 when I moved to Columbia - I had a cone there.

There was another DQ where 77 passes over Garner's Ferry Road, on the North side of the road. I can't remember when it was torn down, but I think it was well before the freeway was built over the site.

There's still a DQ in the truck stop at I-20 and Fairfield Rd(?), but I certainly don't recommend it.

The DQ was next to Seven Oaks Elementary school, and was a quick bike ride from my old neighborhood. Ah, the joys of summer vacation and a few coins in the pocket. After the DQ closed, it was a Chinese restaurant of some kind.
The Christian book store was called "The Living Vine" (pretty sure). I think the folks that owned it were the Higbees and they attended Seven Oaks Presbyterian Church.

The intersection of Ashland and St. Andrews roads had everything a kid needed for summer entertainment in the 70's - the DQ (ice cream), the Mobil gas station (candy), and the Putt-Putt course. That was back in the time when you could disappear all day without your Mom worrying about you.

The DQ on Garners Ferry was where the I77 bridge is now. I worked the grill in 1969.

The DQ I remember being the first one or one of the first one's was the one on Belt Line.. I dont know what's in the building now, but I think it was either in '68 or '69 when it opened.. Anyone remember when?

I can relate to Lou's posts above. I lived in nearby Landmark apts. from 1980-1987 and went to Seven Oaks Elementary K thru 6th. I think it was still a DQ very early in that time period before becoming the Chinese restuarant. Ashland Square was built in the mid 80's and housed Sandy's and a Schiano's in the biggest building nearest St Andrews. Perkins was there until the early 80's when it transitioned to a Bruce's family restuarant. I always loved Perkins, and they had something called"the wishing well" in the front for kids. The Living Vine was definitely the name of the Christian bookstore across from Seven Oaks - I used to buy advent calendars there every Christmas. The Putt-Putt with the arcade was my favorite place to go as a kid, and I was devastated when they tore it down when I was in college.

I worked at the Yesterday's Restaurant in Ashland Square in high school and part of college (does that ever date me!). Weird thing is, when I started in 1986 the place was packed, especially on weekends. By 1990 business had dropped off considerably. I was sad to see it go, but somehow the restaurant has never really worked anywhere else in Five Points, because the northeast location lasted even less time than St. Andrews.

I remember a DQ/Brazier when I was a kid, and living in Blairsville, Ga., mid-'60s. Several moves later, in Lithonia, Ga., 1970, one had just been built, and I almost went to work there.
It's still there and doing business, last time I passed on I-20 at the Lithonia exit (between Conyers and Decatur, just barely in DeKalb County).

I remember the DQ at Garners Ferry. It was right under where the overpass for I-77 is now. It sat next to Greenlawn Cemetery. I still crave a Brazier Burger, been looking for one for a long time. After the DQ closed Lower Richland Motors opened up in the old building. They moved out when the interstste was being built and the building was torn down. LR motors built a new place where Ruby Tuesdays is at now next to the Wal-Mart on Garners Ferry.

The DQ at Garners Ferry Rd was next to a Master Cleaners and a Standard Federal S/L (now NBSC/Synovus) was nearby. I liked the barn look of the DQ buildings.
Standard FSL built a new place across Garners Ferry Rd (now Interstate Battery Center) and moved a second time to the current location at the intersection of Garners Ferry and Pinebelt. LR Motors is now located at 1912 Pineview Drive.20 Jul 11 at 5:20 am

DQ already has locations in Columbiana Centre as well as inside gas stations at US 321 (Charleston Highway) at I-26 and SC 6 and Two Notch Road in Red Bank...
The State had an article indicating DQ was looking for people interested in opening a DQ franchise in and around SC in general so it could happen about 2 months ago...

@Toby and Andrew - Personally, I could live with a DQ/OJ combo. That would be a total nostalgia trip for me. Back in high school, when DQ was on St. Andrews Rd. (the site of the current Micky D's) I would eat there every time I would go to play a round of Putt Putt golf (across the street where the Dollar store is now). As far as OJ goes, I would get one every time I went to Dutch Square (along with some Cromer's peanuts and a Chick-Fil-A). Good times!!!!

I think eggrole station has occupied the old DQ on sunset Blvd (378 across street from the chicken slaughter house) since at least late 80's? Steer clear of the BOGO sickly chick eggrole special, btw. Speaking of which, be mindful if you wander far from the river walk sidewalk there behind the chicken house. Years of chicken parts/juice discharge into the river has resulted in some huge snakes plaguing the area. I grew up on the west bank.

You can still find some stand alone DQ's with Braizer burgers, which were one of my favorite fast food burgers. There were two at Myrtle Beach, but I am not sure if they are still open.
