Constantine's, Knox Abbot Drive: 2000s   15 comments

Posted at 1:21 am in Uncategorized

The building has the look of a Mrs. Winner's which was, I think, a mainly chicken restaurant chain that got in trouble in the 80s. Constantine's was a Greek place, or at least that's the impression I always got driving by. I never ate there because I had Zorba's on Decker close by, and a sure thing "best bread in Columbia" at Grecian Gardens if I were on that side of town and in a Greek mood.

Looking at the odd hours posted here, I'm guessing that this place originally served dinner all week and gradually cut back. I also have a very vague notion that they may have moved for a time to a much smaller building on Meeting Street in a parking lot behind the West Columbia Eggroll Station.

  1. It was also a Po-Pigs Bo-BQ. Was pretty dang good BBQ. You sure it was COnstantines originally, it looks more like something that would have started as a meat and 3 type place.

  3. I think it was a Lee's Chicken place first or maybe second. Lee's was a fried chicken chained founded by the real-life nephew of Col. Sanders.

  4. I remember it being Winners chicken. Then Constantines, po pigs, and finally Hudsons. Hudsons had the weird hours and only lasted a few months. The Hudsons in Lexington is good but too far away. Not sure why they didn't give this one long enough to succeed.

  5. The Hudson's remote location that last occupied the building had horrible service; it's no surprise to me that they didn't last very long. The one is Lexington is fantastic, in terms of both food and service; I highly recommend it.

  6. I remember this place when I went to BC back in the early 90's. Nobody was ever there. We always thought it was a front for something else. It became Hudson's last year. Hudson's moved this location to someplace in Irmo.

  7. Wasn't this building a Bojangles back in the 80's, early 90's? Or was that another building that was close by on Knox Abbott?

  8. The first thing I remember here was Mrs. Winners. I have a very fuzzy feeling that it might have been called Savannah’s for a brief while—not confident on that, though. Later it became “Constantine’s.” During that time, though, from Mrs. Winners to Constantine’s, it was the same owner.

  9. Yes, definitely a Mrs. Winner's building. I seem to remember a Three Sisters chicken as well. Maybe not in this location, because I am unfamiliar w/ the history. I know there was one on Elmwood, I think where the Lizard's is now. Not sure if Bojangles took them out of business or not. That Bo's has been on Elmwood for quite some time. I remember my buddy's parents used to bring back buscuits after church, and that was '85 or so.

  10. I remember the Sisters Chicken and Biscuits (actually, at the time a unit of Wendy's) on Elmwood. They had a guy on Elmwood skipping up and down in the median between Main and Assembly holding a small sign (less than one foot square) saying (on one side) "Sisters Chicken and Biscuits" and the other "Best in Town." Between skips, he flipped the sign around so that you didn't have to rubberneck to get the whole message.

  11. There are still some Mrs. Winner's around Atlanta. The chain is still popular around Atlanta and there is one in Birmingham as well.

  13. Store was torn down and replaced by a Taco Bell and a vacant store that was supposed to be a dry cleaning store.

  14. Yup, Po-Pigs had some pretty good 'cue, but too bad they didn't even last a year. --I ate here a few times in 2006.

  15. I work downtown and many times my co-workers and I would go to Constantine's for lunch. It was convenient and good. The Greek salads were wonderful as were the gyros. Miss it.
