I'll admit that when this came up in Have Your Say, I couldn't even remember that there was a Save a Lot on Saint Andrews Road. In point of fact it hasn't been there that long, replacing the Kroger some time in 2015. That seems curious to me, as though they badly misread the market or something changed. The KJ's down the road might be direct competition, but that was planned before this store went in, and despite the Bi-Lo to Harvey's change at the top of the hill, I still don't see that location as direct competition to a discounter like Sav a Lot. Commenter Andrew references the new Wal Mart Neighboorhood Market, but that seems a good way from here..

At any rate, it appears the store will close on 22 June.

(Hat tip to commenter Sidney).

  1. The place struck me as a grocery store version of Big Lots.

  2. Save-A-Lot is nothing more than a low rent version of Aldi. It was owned by the struggling grocery wholesaler SuperValu until a year or two ago when another entity bought them out. I expect them to be significantly affected when the expansions of Aldi and Lidl are done.

Anyway, there was a Kroger store in Raleigh, NC that's similar to the one that was here. Both were money losing stores (over $1M) that had high theft rates. The one in Raleigh closed only 9 months after this one did when Kroger decided to close two underperforming stores. Coincidentally enough, the Kroger in Raleigh also got converted to a Roses/Save-A-Lot combination store like this one did. It wouldn't surprise me at all if this store was franchised by Roses' Parent company.
