Pizza Hut, 621 Saint Andrews Road: March 2015 5 comments
Well, I don't know why this Pizza Hut closed, but just having visited once, to take these pictures, I can hazard a guess as to a contributing factor: The exit to St. Andrews Road is terrible. I drove around the building on the old drive-through route, and found that when I came out in front of the building again, there was not enough room to get my car pointed to the right and exit onto SAR headed for Tram Street. Granted some cars have a better turning radius, but still it's not well designed, and due to space constraints probably cannot be well designed.
I think it's interesting that the building is of the current generation of Pizza Hut designs. I'm more used to seeing the old style ones (like this and this) closed.

UPDATE 16 February 2016 -- As mentioned in the comments, the Domino's in this location is now open, and has been for a while:

Dominos has been open there for the better part of a month, leaving their old space a couple blocks north in the process.

Does anyone remember the Pizza Hut downtown on South Main Street? I don't remember the exact address but it was a small dine-in location not a delivery. I worked there back around 1990/91 and Otis Belton was the manager.

I remember that Pizza Hut very well, though I have never done a closing on it since the building was torn down and the location is now completely different.
My roommate and I used to eat there sometimes when we lived in The Towers in the early 1980s. Our opinion was that they were running an experiment to see how cold they could get the building and not serve frozen pizza! (I suspect they just did not want students lingering and cranked up the AC for that reason, but you would know better than I..)

@Richard Lavender I was recently researching all of the old-skool Pizza Huts in Columbia and from my research, the "S main st" location was more or less at 1100 Newman St, Columbia, SC 29201, across from where Storage Rentals of America is at now on N Main st. By 1994 it was demolished.

Comment: There had been a Pizza Hut at this location for at least 30 years. It used to the old style but was redone sometime back. I think it was harder to get in and out since they remodeled it. The drive thru was a real pain to use, they eventually closed It and you had to go inside to pick up your order. I think itb@s funny they say they b@movedb@ to Bush River Rd. This is the same location the Pizza Hut on Broad River moved to when they closed. Probably the only thing that actually moved was the phone number.

Comment: I remember the remodel ED mentioned...my memory is that it took place somewhere in the 1998-01 timeframe...the building was completely torn down and rebuilt.
I agree with ED's assessment on the whole move to Bush River Village and I think they were trying to glorify the closing of this one as a move. It's actually within walking distance of one of the recently closed RadioShack locations that hasn't featured here yet.
Another thing is that if you look in the signage (pics #2 and #4 from top) that was roadside, you'll notice that the elliptical shaped one that once housed drive-thru lettering actually physically touched the building.
I almost feel that whatever takes over this spot will need to rebuild, reconfigure the drive-thru or be a business that doesn't utilize drive-thrus the way fast food places do. I wish I knew the exact answer but a large part of me is hoping it doesn't become another title loan operation...I have such mixed feelings about title loan places. I think they have a propensity to take advantage of people (but I've never had the need for one) yet we'd have many more vacant buildings that are former homes to different fast food places than we'd have otherwise.
In a world where the Avon next door can take over what I understand to be a former KFC, you never know what will come next...all I know is that it can't stay vacant forever.

Comment: I had my first experience eating pizza as a kid at this location, well at least the first incarnation of it. I used to think Pizza Hut had the best pizza around. Then the baton got passed on the Godfather's. Now I just make my own or get one of the grocery store deli pizzas and add more toppings to it.

Pizza Hut, Domino's, Little Ceasars, they all suck. The Parthanon in Five Points had some good pizza. The Village Idiot has about the best pizza in town now.
All pizza in Columbia is barely edible.
If you have not had a pizza from up north, Philly, New York, Vermont, Mass. You'd be pissed off at the garbage that restaurants sell around here.
We had to take inventory at work this past weekend and the boss ordered pizza from Scottie's in Blythewood, People around here talk about how good Scotties pizza is, THEY DON'T KNOW, Scotties also sucks. I am considering moving up north, not only for good quality food, pizza, cheese steak sandwiches, ect. but to also get away from the "people" that think they are "Entitled" in the south. The "Entitiled" people do not think they need to work for a living and trash the state.
Okay entitled people, you won, I'm moving, don't follow me and trash the state all you want. Throw your garbage out of you car, break the laws, you deserve it.
