Pizza Hut, 1300 Knox Abbot Drive: mid 2000s   7 comments

Posted at 1:58 am in closing

I've mentioned in one of my other posts, my gradual disenchantment with Pizza Hut which over the years has, due to bad corporate choices, turned from a place I looked forward to going to into a place which provides a mediocre experience at best.

I believe this former Pizza Hut on Knox Abbot Drive in Cayce is, to date, the last Pizza Hut I have eaten at in Columbia. There was nothing particularly bad about it that put me off Columbia Pizza Huts, in fact the staff was quite friendly and attentive -- it's just that in my own stomping grounds, I generally have better options for pizza. This was, however, about 10pm on Christmas Eve 2002, a date and time when anything higher up the food chain than The Waffle House that's still open is pretty hard to find. I was en route from Augusta to Pawleys Island. I can't quite picture now how I ended up on Knox Abbot unless I was cutting down I-26 to get to I-77 and the Sumter Highway, still it was a welcome break.

I don't know when this store went under, and it seems a bit odd, since I can't think of another Pizza Hut on that side of town. At any rate, the tax place has now been there several years. Perhaps they can get you a deep-dish refund.

  1. Closing comment was that another Pizza Hut couldn't be thought of on this side of town.

There is another one (still open and doing well) on Hwy 378 just across from the Lexington Hosp and there is still the Pizza Hut delivery on Charleston Hwy in the Edenwood Plaza.

  2. I loved this one cause they still did the buffet. They closed in the fall of 06. I went there all the time and then one day they had a sign on the door saying closed.

  3. I used to go every Tuesday to the Pizza Hut on Raeford Road in Fayetteville for the buffet in the late 80s. To this day, Tuesday is my pizza night.

  4. Seems like a lot of these 70's-80's era "sit down" Pizza Hut locations nationwide have been closed recently. Being replaced mostly with strip mall, delivery-only locations.

  5. The Pizza Hut on Hwy 378 still has the lunch buffet. My fav pizza buffet used to be the Pizza Inn in west columbia (12th st and Hwy 1) where the "Raceway Gas" station is now. Seemed they had a better selection than the Pizza Hut buffet, and for simply pizza.... My fav was "Shakeys" on Airport Blvd.

  6. I don't remember anything about the pizza other than you could watch them make it, but hands down, my favorite place as a kid was Shakeys!!!!! LOVED going there & watching those old B/W movies (Spanky & the Gang?) while we ate!! Favorite birthday party site once we moved to Columbia!!!

  7. I think the Liberty Tax that operated here is no more...last couple of times I've been down this stretch of Knox Abbott I've noticed signage offering the property for sale...
