I noticed this little church on Beltline the other day, which seems be have been about half re-painted at some point. As far as I can tell from google, there is no new location for Palmetto Baptist Temple, and their web site is down, so I guess they are gone. The attached school apparently closed several years earlier.

The gym facility behind the church seems to be of a much more recent vintage than the church itself, and there is an old, long, out-building, probably the school building, that seems to be older than either.

  1. My brother-in-law went to this school before my wife and I were married. I would go with her to pick him up from time to time in her 1973 Volkswagon.
I remember thinking to myself, is this a school?
    Must have been around 1974.

  2. I may be totally wrong here, but was this once the campus of Julia Bates private school? I remember going to a friend's piano recital there back in the late 60s.

  3. Cary - I believe it was a private school when my brother in law went there but I do not remember the name of the school, funny though, the name Julia Bates sounds familiar to me.

  4. Cary -- Yes, it was formerly Julia Bates until about 1979-1980 (or so), when Palmetto Baptist Temple (the church) and Palmetto Baptist Academy (the church's school) purchased it. PBT/PBA split a year or two prior from Harbor Baptist Church/Harbor Christian School in West Columbia. Glenforest School now occupies the old Harbor site.

  6. I went to Julia Bates Private School.in 1965/1966.
It was a very good experience and allowed me to start First Grade at 5 years old instead of 7 at public school. My teacher was Mrs. Bates herself, wife of Columbia Mayor Lester Bates. This school gave me a head start and a good one.

  7. It was indeed Julia Bates School. My sister and I both went there until it was sold while we were on spring break in 1980. It was great. So small that the first graders knew the high school kids. And the “little red schoolhouse” (now painted beige sadly)was not a church. It was used for kindergarten and preschool classes. It was more than just a school to us but more of an extension of our family. Good times, great friends and I am thankful for the memories I have. 1976 preschool grad to 5th grade. Sis had made it through 8th. Former students have a Facebook page. We still talk and walk down memory lane! I do wonder what Cheryl Xavier could have been talking about above. Don’t think she really attended because that’s so far fetched. Nothing but great memories but we left after that buyout. The PB people were very strange.

  8. I went here as a kid. It must have been 1987-1989 (ish).. My brother went here at well! My mother was a member of the church. I was able to start school early and be with my brother.

  9. Sweet and fond memories of this school and living in that old red schoolhouse. So sad Bro Darrell is no longer with us!
