A. C. Moore was the follow-on operation to the old Harbison Bi-Lo. I never went in, but had the feeling from the name that it was probably something like Hobby Lobby. Late last year they for some reason lost their lease and had to vacate the premises. They started a sale and clearance program almost immediately, and it appears to have been successful based on how little is left inside...

I find it curious that they were let go as the plaza is not completely sold, and it will take a special store to get shoppers to brave the traffic and make it a destination, something that that apparently did not apply to the grocery store.

I thought I had some daylight pix of the store after the closing was announced, but they seem pretty well hidden at the moment.

  1. Dang, that was quick! I was just at Total Wine about two weeks ago and didn't even notice. I have heard all of the talk about them leaving the Harbison area. I wonder if the rumors about them moving into the old Lake Murray Blvd. Piggly Wiggly are true? I would prefer a Fresh Market or Whole Foods thought. The northwest side of town could benefit from one of those.

  2. Per staff at AC Moore: The Total Wine and More outbid them on the lease and will be moving into that space. AC Moore - which is indeed like a Michaels or Hobby Lobby - is looking for a new spot in Columbia.

  3. Wow, surprised to hear that about Total Wine. That place is pretty large as is. It'll be huge if it takes up the whole A.C. Moore spot.

  4. I am surprised as well about Total Wine moving in there. I guess they want to be like Greens on Piney Grove. I am with Homer, I think something needs to move in to that old Pig store on Lake Murray Blvd. I was around the shopping center yesterday and almost everything is closed. I remember when that place was built and it was a huge deal. They had to truck in huge amounts of dirt to build up the site. I just fine it hard to believe that in the years that store has been empty that they could not at least find someone that would lease it on a temp basis. I have not seen the inside of the Pig store. What is left? Freezers etc? That may be why no one wants it because there is to much work to convert it.

  5. Total Wine's current space is 16,016 square feet. AC Moore just left a space that is 26,000 square feet.

The former Piggly Wiggly itself* is 41,388 square feet. That means that if AC Moore were to take over the old Piggly Wiggly #60 in a space comparable to what they did here, there'd still be app. 15,388 square feet to allow something else to move in. Keep in mind that next door is a former Revco that was Suncom for a while as well that is vacant with an approximate size of 10-15K Square feet.

    * William was wondering what was still remaining and from what I could tell, all the shelves have been removed as have the registers but the walls remain...

I thought about the former Office Depot (Harbison Court) space, but as I've noted on that page, it's about to become GolfSmith. The other possilibty is the current Staples at 281 Park Terrace Drive (Staples is moving into the new Columibana on Park Development) may be able to fit them as I think it's comparable in size to what AC Moore seeks.

  6. I did not hear about the GolfSmith store. When is that going to happen? Thanks!

  7. @William, as it happened, I was checking to see possible spots where AC Moore could go, I thought of the former Office Depot at Harbison Court. When I got to DDR's listing on Harbison Court, I found Golfsmith to be going into Office Depot's space. As I mentioned when announcing it on the Office Depot page, this is another example of DDR's ability to land a new tenants for Harbison Court in fairly short order...

  8. Well, the pig has *been* vacant, and Moore's has known for months they would have to move. It seems to me that if they were going to do that, they would have already.

  9. According to research I've done and posted on the Piggly Wiggly page, this month marks 5 years since the closure Piggly Wiggly #60 at High Pointe Center located at 800 Lake Murray Blvd.

  10. @Andrew
I find it hard to beleve that the owners of the Pig shopping center would not be able to find someone in 5 years to take over that store. I am wondering if that whole shopping center should be torn down and put up a Costco. I know there are tons of rumors about them coming. That would be a good place.

  11. The thing about Costco is that they require a site of at least 16 acres. High Pointe Centre sits on approximately 5 acres (per an acreage calculator I have managed to find)

It would also require Tripp's Fine Cleaners, Papa John's Pizza, and Groucho's Deli (the main High Pointe Centre tenants remaining) to move as well.

  12. @ALL - yes it has been five years since the Pig left High Point. I talked to the manager before they closed and he told me that could not reach a lease agreement and that was why they were leaving.

@Andrew and William - all that remains of the Pig are the walls and paint.

Went by there this evening to pick up some egg rolls from New China. I have no idea how they stay in business. There is hardly anyone in the restaurant when I go there, but I love the food!!!

I agree with Andrew that this site would never fly as a Costco. They need copious amounts of land just like Wal-Mart and Sam's require. And the last thing we need are more of those!!

  14. Total Wine has completed their move into this spot. In the meantime, Total Wine's original location appears to be undergoing some type of overhaul (not sure what for just yet).

  17. If you look at the first 3 photos you'll notice next door to this was Family Christian Stores...the whole chain liquidated in 2017 (according to two other area stores that featured here)...this one closed prior to those (ca. 2016) but never featured here...then it appears to me as if Footaction moved in to that space (after being rebranded from Just For Feet). Now it appears as if Footaction here has closed as Footaction moves into parent company Foot Locker.
