I'm not when this Bi-Lo closed, but it's listed in the February 1997 phonebook and was gone by the mid 2000s. Actually, I'm not entirely sure it closed, as the Bi-Lo on Saint Andrews Road is fairly new -- perhaps it relocated to there.

It was apparently replaced by two stores, an A C Moore craft store in most of the space, and Total Wine in the rest.

There has been a fair bit of churn in this plaza (which fronts on both Harbison and Columbiana). Over the years I've featured Computer Renaissance, and Gold's Gym, but there are a number I never got around to.

UPDATE 20 May 2012: Added the store number and exact closing date to the post title based on information from commenters Andrew & Irmojeff.

  1. I've often wondered why so many grocery stores have shunned Harbison and Bi-lo had a prime location and decided to bail to St. Andrews.

  2. I contacted Bi-Lo corporate about this and they moreless indicated that the Harbison traffic worked to their disadvantage

btw, Ted, This was the former Bi-Lo #84. Its last day at 275 Harbison Blvd was February 26, 2002. The next day was when #442 opened in at 6021 St. Andrews Road.

  3. It was actually BiLO #184. I used to work there :)

It used to literally take me 20-30 minutes just to get out of the parking lot during Christmas shopping season. Traffic was beyond horrendous. But that way before Bower Pkwy existed.

  4. Let's not forget that Wal-Mart started out where the Books-A-Million, the old Gold's Gym and the furniture store is.

  5. Homer, what's interesting about the furniture store is that it started out as Rhodes Furniture. Then Rhodes went bankrupt and Rooms to Go bought it and they've been there ever since.

Rooms to Go had a Landmark Square location back in the 90s but wound up with Rhodes' locations after their bankruptcy after an absence from the Columbia market.

  6. Andrew - if I am incorrect on this please let me know, but didn't the original Rhode's stores in Columbia start out as Rhett Jackson carpet & furniture? I seem to remember my parents buying some furniture from Jackson's years ago....

  7. Homer I just saw your post asking if Rhodes furniture got its start out as Rhett Jackson carpet & furniture and I don't have any memory of it existing...I did find a writeup on Rhett Jackson from the South Carolinana library so it's possible there was a Rhett Jackson store here (before my time)...

  8. @Andrew - thanks for the link. I knew that had run a furniture & carpet store back in the day. I had completely forgotten about him owning The Happy Bookseller!!
