Huddle House / Title Cash, 3801 Rosewood Drive: 2010 etc   14 comments

Posted at 1:30 am in closing

I've always thought of Huddle House as a downmarket Waffle House, which is saying something, but it almost seems like the way Hardee's and Bantam Chef used to be related -- you saw the second in places that couldn't support the first. I'm pretty sure I've been in a Huddle at one time or another, but I have absolutely no reliable memory of such an occasion right now. I am sure I was never in this one which sits at the intersection of Rosewood Drive and Kilbourne Road.

The LoopNet listing suggests that the follow-on operation, one of Columbia's ubiquitous (but not apparently very lucrative) title pawn operations, has been closed at least since mid October 2010.

UPDATE 12 April 2012 -- It's now a Marco's Pizza:

  1. I don't recall it ever being a Waffle House and I rode down this area regularly for many years b/c it's real close to where my late grandmother lived. I don't think I've ever been to a Huddle House as I don't think there have ever been to any of them and Waffle House doesn't impress me at all. I've been a couple of times and I was very unimpressed. I don't know if I'd enjoy Huddle House or not. Anyone that has been to one is welcome to enlighten me one way or another as to their experiences...

  4. It was a Huddle House as recently as 1992. My ex-roommate and I ate at it that year when we lived in a triplex on Harden Street. I know it was no longer Huddle House by 1997, as I bought a house nearby that year. I think HH closed in 1995 or 1996. I don't specifically recall the food, so it probably was close to Waffle House quality.

  5. Yep. I ate at it when it was Huddle House, and that time frame seems about right.

  6. In regards to your Hardees/Bantam Chef anecdote, of course you know Hardees are called Carl's Jr elsewhere, but exactly the same as Hardees, appearance, menu and all.

  7. Yeah, the original Hardees was bought out by Carl's Jr (which still seems a very weird name..) years ago.

Before that I heard somewhere (perhaps incorrectly?) that Hardees & Bantam Chef were the same company with BCs in hamlets too small to make it worth while to build a Hardees and hire a full Hardees-sized staff.

  8. This Huddle House did pretty good business back in the '80s. The food and menu (and service) was interchangeable with Waffle House and if it wasn't for the different signage you would not have noticed the difference. Greasy spoon all the way. Gotta love 'em.

  9. Carl's Jr. was created because the founder of the company, Carl Katcher originally had restaurants name "Original Carl's." He then decided to open smaller operations and named them "Carl's Jr."

  10. I'm so glad all of you remember this Huddle House since Ted & I don't...I have never been and it doesn't look like it's going on my bucket list from what you are describing (since Waffle House isn't that impressive to me)...of course we don't currently have one on Columbia...the closest ones (currently) are in Camden, Batesburg and Aiken according to their location finder...

  11. I've lived very near this building since 1991. Ate at Huddle House many many times. It was a carbon copy of a Waffle House. Two very nice servers worked there for years and always took good care of my wife and me. When HH closed they went around the corner and worked at IHOP till it closed.

I'm sure the title loan operation has been closed since longer than Oct. 2010, ted.

  12. There is a banner out front to say that Marco's Pizza is coming here, and I believe it due to the people and equipment and activity here last week. Yay! Much better than an empty storefront.

Marco's national website says they already have one in Columbia, but I know nuthin' about it.

  13. Their other location that is already existing is located at 4561 Hard Scrabble Road at Lee Road in Northeast Richland. A friend of mine has been that lives nearby and he speaks highly of it.
