Here's another closed gas/convenience store, this one on Saint Andrews just past the Chef Store.

Going by the Google reviews, it appears they were open into fall of 2023 at least. LoopNet says the building was built in 2000, which seems late for the detached-restroom layout, but I don't really have any reason to doubt it.

UPDATE 1 February 2024: Reordered the pictures some. Added "Hess" to the post title based on the comments.

  1. I believe that this was originally a Hess.

  2. It was originally a Hess, and Loopnet is very wrong. I lived in Whitehall from spring of 1995 to spring of 1997 and I was buying gas at this station then. I don't recall when it was built, but this station was active and fully functioning in 1995.

  3. I don't know the exact date, but I do know the Speedway closed in November of 2023.

According to the original deed available on the Lexington County website, the property was purchased by Hess Realty Corp on January 12, 1989. Loopnet is definitely wrong.

  4. Also the Hess/Speedway on Harbison has been closed and boarded up for some time.

  5. As has been noted this was a Hess station for a number of years...then in 2015 Hess sold their retail operation to Speedway (someone noted they were owned by Marathon Oil). I do remember it being discussed on Have Your Say here when it happened.

I do remember this station being there in the 90s just like 59 Ford Wheelman does...this is one of 3 they have recently closed (one in front of Sparkleberry Square that has featured here and then the Harbison Blvd. one Tom referenced that hasn't yet)...a friend at church theorizes that that it looked like a dump compared to the new QT that opened up down the road...I'll admit that it did feel cluttered and tight on the inside (and one of my mom's friends felt likewise).

  6. I reported the Harbison Speedway closing on Have Your Say back in January - I think Ted just hasn't gotten to it yet. I really think I remember that one being open in December, but I won't swear to it and it would make sense that it probably closed pretty close to when the one on St. Andrews did.

I have really fond memories of going to the Hess stations with my grandma when I was a kid around Christmas to get the Hess trucks. We'd always get a couple of bottled Cokes, a pack of the little octagon shaped cheese crackers, and a roll of butter rum Lifesavers too. Such a happy time.
