Pon Di River Caribbean Bar and Bistro, 2344 Broad River Road: Early 2023 3 comments
This Island restaurant replaced Applebee's in 2020, not a great year to start a restaurant.
As far as I can tell, they were open up until a month or so ago, at which time they closed for renovations. As there is an actual construction dumpster on the property, I trust that is actually happening, in which hope I'm bolstered by the "Now Hiring" sign.
UPDATE 9 May 2023: As it turns out they re-opened as a new business, so I am taking the temporary tag off the post title. The new name is Tha River Sports Bar & Grill:

Today I noted signage on this building leading me to believe that it's to become Tha River...

The old Broad River Road Applebees. It was hopping when St. Andrews was THE place to live for 20-something professionals in Columbia. It was built when Applebees had a commissary model for their restaurants and the kitchen was later revised so they did everything on site, inlcuding fried foods. You'd go into this Applebees and come out smelling like Applebees. And cigarette smoke. But, mostly, Applebees.
Other popular places were the Hooters in the old Kettle at Longcreek Drive and Annabelle's in Dutch Square Mall (lovingly referred to by it's staff as "AnnaHells").
