Well, this happened sooner than I figured, and this store was completely gone by the time I got around to visiting Columbia Mall.

Of course, it appears to have been a failry small store, so I guess I shouldn't be surprised. As you can tell if you click through on the mall directory, Payless was on the lower level just two storefronts down from the former Sears. The storefront to the left of it is also vacant, though I'm not sure what it was.

As a reminder, Payless declared bankruptcy on 14 February 2019 and all the chain's stores have closed or will be closing soon.

  1. One look at the way the mall's directory has been "updated" tells me all I need to know about how the owners of this mall feel about it.

  2. Wow. Did they use electrical tape to update the directory?

Charlotte Russe will definitely be following. Maybe these 2 Foot Lockers and 2 VS are also on the chopping block?

  3. Tom: The owners are absentee landlords. Look at news articles about other properties they own (Gwinnett Place, Shoppingtown Mall, Burlington NJ Mall.

As for VS and Footlocker. They actually enjoy their tenancy at Columbia Place because they pay a different rent spread than many of the other tenants. Their rent is solely based on their sales. If anything people should push these developers to do more.

Macy's agreement with the mall doesn't expire until 2037.

  4. My take on the black tape is that it is intended to be a temporary fix until new signage can come off the production line but the 'temporary' is liable to translate into a couple of years (based on the fact that it looks like the former Sears is covered and such store closed in the summer of 2017...
