Well, here's a bit of synchronicity. Friday 24 August 2018 was the first time I had ever happened to be in West Columbia, near JackSon's Southern Kitchen at (my) lunch time, so I decided I would finally check the place out.

Pulling in, it seemed to be dark, and there was a sign taped to the door, so I was going to get out and look at it, but then I noticed that the lunch hours during the week were only until 2:30, and it was 3:00, so I figured I had just missed it and drove on. I got home that evening, and people were already posting in Have Your Say that the place had closed down due to legal woes.

Here's the story from WIS (For some reason, they seem to have trimmed most of the text that was originally there).

You may recall that JackSon's started in Richland Mall and moved to Sunset Boulevard in 2016

UPDATE 4 May 2021 -- As reported by commenter Barbara reports, this storefront is undergoing a major upfit. Unfortunately, the construction sign is singularly unhelpful in telling what is to come:

  1. I have a recollection of Ms. B's being here at one point and a past of it getting lost in a database crash somewhere along the way...

  3. About 10 years ago, I believe this location was called The Southern Skillet or something like that. It was a country cooking buffet. Food was alright but nothing special.

  4. Years ago, more than 10, there were several restaurants called Golden Skillet around Columbia and Lexington. They were a chicken place that had pretty good food from what I remember. I worked at Green Manor in the late 70s just down the street from Trenholm Plaza going towards Fort jackson, they sold Etan Allen furniture. Golden Skillit had a place near there and they had one in Lexington sort of across the street from Where Rush's is now. The corner Rush's is on used to be the old Herndon Chevrolet location before they moved.

  6. Interesting that people whose last name is Chavis and run Southern buffets keep having tax evasion troubles (see Vegetable Medley). I wonder if there's a relation.

  7. As reported in The State :

JackSon's opened in Richland Mall in March 2014 in the space that had previously been occupied by S&S Cafeteria.

JackSon’s location on Sunset Boulevard was formerly home to The Southern Skillet which closed there in 2012. The space then became Mrs. B's Southern Kitchen which closed there after three years of operation in 2015.

  8. Former Jackson’s Southern Kitchen to be new restaurant, retail space coming beside it
    May 7, 2021
The former Jackson’s Southern Kitchen at 1213 Sunset Blvd. in West Columbia is being remodeled.
    Former gas station beside Jackson’s
Julian Wilson of Wilson Kilber commercial real estate developers said a new restaurant will occupy the space.
Wilson said he was not ready to disclose the name yet, but the property will be the site of a new restaurant. It was Southern Skillet Buffet before it was Jackson’s.
The former gas station beside 1213 Sunset Blvd. is also being renovated. It will be a retail space, Wilson said. “It will not be auto-related,” said Wilson.
He said the new purpose for the building would take advantage of the customer parking availability around it. Wilson said the remodeling of the buildings is part of the effort to help revitalize West Columbia and make it look better.
