Plato's Grecian Cafe, 810 Dutch Square Boulevard: 1990s   10 comments

Plato's Grecian Cafe was tucked into a strip mall across the street from Dutch Square; today it's a Personnel company. I went there several times over the years, but it never really clicked for me. I always thought of it mainly as a pizza place, and though the pizza was fine, it was not in the running for Best Pizza in Columbia.

The last time I was there, they had some sort of live music. I can't recall if it were a pop band or some kind of Greek folk thing, but anyway that seemed to be where their focus was that night, and I found the table service really suffered for it. Since my inclination to stop was never strong, I never got around to going back after that, and didn't notice for a while that the place was gone.

  1. They had live music every weekend. My neighbor at the time was in a band and they played at Platos about once a week.

  2. Well, my fault for going on the weekend then. I like live music, but not with my meal.

  3. They closed sometime in 2002 or 2003. I had a two-day temp job in that building in January '02, and the boss bought my lunch there the first day. I picked up take-out a few times after that but can't remember exactly when they closed.

  4. I used to get one Gyro and one Souvlaki sandwich delivered from there to the Park Apartments off Broad River Road. I had to order 2 of these massive (1980s definition of that word) just to get it over the $10 delivery limit.

  6. I also remember the Cokesbury book store being in this mall, and it was a secular bookstore then. When they moved out to Broad River Road, as I recall, they converted to a religious bookstore.

  7. They had a GREAT hamburger! Many years ago, I worked off of Stoneridge, and Plato's was a regular lunch spot for us.

  8. They had the BEST fried mushrooms! They were fresh, not frozen, coated in crispy cornmeal batter and served with tzsiki sauce, so good....

  10. Wasn't Platos the primary host of the big annual Columbia Greek Festival?
