One of the most iconic images from the flood was the inundation of the TitleMax building on Devine Street. Some other pictures were actually just as incredible, but the bold color scheme of this storefront really made it stand out. One such image is here, and one shot from the other direction is here.

I finally got a chance to take a look at the damage last Saturday (17 October 2015), and it is even more severe than I expected in that while I thought the building would be a total loss, I was somewhat surprised to see the lot a total loss as well. I'm not sure it comes across well in these pictures (shot against the sun for the most part unfortunately), but the whole lot on the Liberty side of the building has dropped at least three feet.

The Free Times suggests that the site will not be rebuilt:

"That was built in the floodway; it would never be allowed to be built today," says Erich Miarka, program director of the Gills Creek Watershed Association. "Since that building was completely destroyed, I don't think they'll be allowed to build there again."

As an aside, I'm not sure how you get two street numbers offset by six in the same building, but that's what seems to have been the case.

UPDATE 19 January 2016 -- TitleMax now has a sign up for their new location:

UPDATE 18 February 2016 -- It appears something is about to happen here, as the property is now fenced off. My guess would be a demolition:

  1. This is right slap dab in the middle of the area that really got me the most of
the areas that were profiled on the news...

I wonder if you got any pics of any of the damaged stuff such as Subway, Auto Money Title Loans, Jersey Mike's (which just got finished doing some remodeling), Rosewood Crossing or any of the others on Ft. Jackson Blvd. When you did the Forest Acres/Dentsville post I contemplated that if you ever got any pics here in the Ft. Jackson/Rosewood Crossing section of Gills Creek that perhaps that could be another post...

  2. Perhaps they could take out an extremely high interest loan to rebuild.

  3. I am going to miss the people dressed up as the Statue of Liberty waving to drivers in front of the tax office.

  4. Joe, you can come over the St. Andrews if you need to see a SoL person. There is always at the St. Andrews and Ashland Rd. location.

It's hard to believe that tax season is upon us again!!!

  10. Hey Ted I looked closer at the image you posted regarding the new location and it reveals that it's actually the new location for Liberty Tax Service at East Pointe Plaza...a quick look at East Pointe Plaza's site plan confirms as such as well...

  11. Ah, yep, you're right. I couldn't see it too clearly from Ruby Tuesday, but looking over from Moe's today, it's definitely for Liberty.

  12. I believe Liberty Tax has been in the East Pointe location for some time. Perhaps they cosolidated offices.

Nationwide Insurance may have been there previously.

Ted, when you photograph a closed store do you shoot other likely candidates in the area? Such as their shopping center neighbors?

  13. I often do, which is not to say that I am always able to find the pictures later.

  14. Today's The State had a writeup indicating that this building will be having a date with the excavator before the end of the month (which needs to happen)...
