  3. @tonkatoy,

    Ain't it the truth? :-)

Unfortunately due to seating and new camera issues, those are the best shots from this trip. Hit the "commentary" link in the categories sidebar and you should find some more..

  4. @ted,

Where was the place that had the pirate mural on the building? The reason I ask is that I saw the PP on the stein which reminded me of a trip I made YEARS ago to Fernandina Beach. There was a bar that served a drink that was called Pirate's Punch. This drink had like four or five rums mixed several tropical juices and it was served in something that looked like a miniature punch bowl. As I remember, it was a very tasty drink, but after one, you had better hope you were within staggering distance of a hotel. I can't remember the name of the bar. Like I said, this was YEARS ago when Fernandina was a place you went to get away from it all!!!!! Sort of like I used to do at folly Beach before it got so commercialized....

  5. Yes, actually the moon over the Nassau County Courthouse, the Post Office stairs and the pirate mural all are in Fernandina Beach, my father's hometown.

And yes, I spent many an un-airconditioned summer's day down there growing up when it was a sleepy small town and we walked around all day completely free-range until suppertime.

The pirate mural is actually, I believe, on the back of a hardware/paint store on Beech Street around 8th or 9th. You may be thinking of "The Palace Saloon" at the corner of Centre and 2nd, which is the most famous and historic bar in town: here and here

And here is an "actual" pirate by the mural.

  6. @ted -

That was it!! The Palace Saloon! Got me thinking that I may have some pictures from my trip there. If I do, they are buried in one of several boxes stashed in the back of my closet. Back in those days I never went anywhere without my trusty 35mm in the back seat of the car.

A friend of mine used to be a manager for Kmart and he was transferred there in the late 70s'-early 80's when it was a small town. When we went a few years later commercialism had started to creep in but it was still pretty laid-back.

I'll have to show the pirate mural to a friend of mine at work. It is the spitting image of him, beer mug and all.

Last comment, why is it that hands and feet are the hardest things to draw? And why are his toenails painted?......:^)

  7. Love your yearly Florida pics! Reminds me of our summer trips when we drove south from Kentucky, and I'd pick up all the brochures in the rest stops for the all the Florida tourist attractions. We hit a number of them, but never Weeki Wachee. I wish I had the old brochures. Those would be worth scanning and comparing to the activities they have now.

  8. Well, Weeki Wachee was touch-and-go for a while, but since the state took it over as a State Park, it looks to be around for the foreseeable future. (Though I half expect someone to make a stink about state employees being hired to look attractive underwater).

I'm glad I got to Cypress Gardens before it closed, but I missed Rainbow Springs while it was still an attraction.

  9. MeTv channel 106 in Cola. shows Route 66 reruns at 3:00 am on Mondays. A couple of weeks ago they had an episode that was filmed at Weeki Wachee where Tod fell in love with a mermaid.
