Senor O'Malley's, 715 Harden Street: Mid February 2013 7 comments
With a name like Senor O'Malley's this place sounds like Columbia's answer to Charleston's Jaunita Greenberg's. I have to admit though that I was completely unaware of it, despite having been in the area multiple times recently.
From the local blogger reviews here and here, it souunds as though I probably would have liked it, though perhaps not when the college crowd was out strong.

I think it's location in that sketchy as hell strip between Bey's and the head shop probably had a lot to do with its demise. I certainly wouldn't have gone there after dark.

Yeah, I've never thought of that location in particular as bad, but Five Points gets kind of skeevy even before the late-night incident timeframe.ted

In order to offer a Living Social or Groupon deal, you have to offer at least half off and then of the half you offer, you split that half with Groupon or Living Social... So at best, you see 25% of your original price...

Kind of surprised by this. We ate there twice. They always seemed busy. The food was generally good, but the service was slow. I got the impression the kitchen was the culprit for the speed of service. I think they probably did more bar business than food business and since the bar is where you make your money, this really is a surprise.

@ANYONE that may be able to comment.....
I am interested in finding out about the history of all of the old buildings that still exist in 5 Points, the Vista and along Main St. I have been toying with this since I met an older black gentleman outside of Kelly's Pub, on Washington St., during one of the old 3 Rivers Music Festivals. He grew up along what was then known as the black Main St. He told me about all of the buildings that used to exist in that area and said that Kelly's used to house a barber shop and an attorney's office. Then one evening I was at the Art Bar see a band and noticed what looked like the remnants of old sliding doors on the inside wall in the back of the bar. That really got me to thinking about what these buildings were originally used for.
I know that the history of most of the Vista buildings revolve around the railroad and manufacturing and I know some of the Main St. and 5 Points history from conversing with older people and by what I can find on the web (which isn't a lot except for some old pictures scattered here and there).
Does anyone know of a any resources, either online or in print, where I could gather some info? Maybe when I can retire, I'll go to the city archives or the library and write a book about this. Like that's going to happen any time soon...lol!!!

the one time i went there I got the feeling that the place was not managed very well. it seemed to be just a couple of guys with a bar and not a business you could count on for consistently good food and service.

Good thing I didn't buy that Groupon! It seems like that when businesses offer a Groupon, Living Social or the State's DealSaver, it is the restaurant's last gasp. Not always, but a lot of the time.
