OfficeMax / Office Depot, 252 Harbison Boulevard: 16 June 2012 14 comments
This storefront, caty-cornered from the Harbison Barnes & Noble, was originally an OfficeMax. When OfficeMax left South Carolina in 2006, Office Depot took the opportunity to take over the space.
As far as I know, Office Depot isn't in any trouble as neither the Two Notch nor Dutch Square stores seem to be closing, but I guess it was a hard sell to get people to brave Harbison traffic for printer paper and paper clips.
Unlike a lot of store closing sales, this one actually had some good bargains. I got an external DVD drive and a USB drive enclosure for a really good price when I went in to check it out.
UPDATE 12 September 2012 -- The place is now a liquication outlet. This seems to be similar to the kind of event sometimes hosted by the Jamil temple where you pay an entrance fee and then look for bargains on electronics and other items. When I went by a week or two ago, the door fee was $5:
UPDATE 1 May 2013 -- It's now Golfsmith:

I, like Homer, was planning to snag up some liquidation deals but never made it.
btw, Ted, OfficeMax didn't pull out of SC completely, just Columbia. The closest OfficeMax locations are in Spartanburg, Orangeburg and Greenwood (aside from OfficeMax.com)
tonkatoy, if you don't enjoy fighting Harbison traffic, I recommend you steer clear of doing your Christmas shopping in the Filipino capitol of Manilla. The Filipino culture is just as strong and vibrant as any but one of the characteristics of their culture is that Christmas is a big deal there starting with the beginning of the 'ber' months and the malls are shoulder to shoulder with people. Simply put, it makes Harbison look like a light crowd.

My recollection is that this Office Depot closed because their lease was up and this was too large a space for their needs and current layout. I don't know if they have any stores closer to Harbison, but there is still one in 5 points, and probably one in the northeast (which I never go to - everything has moved too far out -- shopping there is now like traveling to another city.)

Office Depot has the following locations in the Columbia area:
- 1001 Harden Street (Marketplace at Harden) in 5 Points
- 421 Bush River Road (Dutch Square Center)
- 10050 Two Notch Road (Northpointe Commons in Northeast Richland)
- 5432 Sunset Blvd. (Lexington)Andrew

Yep, it appears to be a permanent siting of the kind of liquidation sale that comes to Jamil sometimes.
I've added pix.

I stopped by there with my wife over the weekend and was put off by the $5 fee they wanted just to enter. I of course didn't pay it and I've never heard of such a thing. If anyone one hits it up, let us know if its worth the money.

I have not been and did not go to the liquidation sale here, but several years ago I did go to the one at Jamil Temple and recall that I left without buying anything.

folks, Golfsmith is about to open up here...another testament to DDR's ablity to land tenants to fill vacancies in fairly short order for Harbison Court.
Sleepy's, The Mattress Professionals is about to open in the former Avenue (located between the new Off-Broadway Shoes and Once Upon a Child)...

I stumbled upon an article announcing that Office Depot and OfficeMax are planning a merger...

Today I noticed signage that Golfsmith is now liquidating and will be leaving Harbison Court in the coming weeks...

Apparently this is one of 60 Golfsmith stores to close stemming from their bankruptcy.

Man, I meant to get by there but completely forgot about it. I never shopped there because of its location. If I need office supplies that I can't find at a K-Mart, etc. I always go to Staples. I would much rather deal with Bower Pkwy. than Harbison.
