As I've mentioned before, I have a soft spot for Fred's though the Columbia stores were all somewhat out of my way. I'm starting to think though that for whatever reason, perhaps because Dollar General got here first, Columbia simply isn't a Fred's town.

Glancing at Google News for Fred's stories makes it appear that the chain is in pretty good shape overall, but when this and the Decker store join the Cedar Terrace store on the closed ledger, half of the Columbia locations will have gone under.

This will be a big blow for Sunset Court (love that marquee), which has already recently lost Wood Zone.

  1. Columbia will still have Fred's locations at Platt Springs & Emmanuel Church Road (Platt Springs Center) in what looks like a former grocery store of some sort and at St. Andrews Shopping Center in a former TJ Maxx/Eli's Fashion Warehouse (maybe they might go after a few others but no idea where a good fit for them might be...

  2. I have never shopped at Fred's. I always likened them to a Big Lot's and I rarely go there because I can never find the items that they advertise in their ads. Please correct me if I am wrong and I may give them a visit.

Blast from the past - I was looking at the Phar-Mor entry on here. I do miss that store!! I loved shopping there. They had great prices and selections. Most of my old VHS movie collection (in the day) came from the off-rental sales!!!

  3. De Lucas italian restaurant also closed earlier at this location. I think it lasted about a year.

  4. Deluccas didn't close. They moved up the road to the same complex that has jersey mikes and the hibachi grill. It is a bigger location and they are always busy.
