Haverty's Furniture / Good Wood Finished & Unfinished Furniture, 3303 Forest Drive: 4 June 2012 11 comments
When The State announced Good Wood's closing back in February, I have to admit that my immediate thought was to wonder what would become of the streetside rocking chair of which I have always been fond. The chair, the gull-wing lights and the cut-out lettering on the Harrison Road fence all give the place a distinctive and appealing look.
The State article is interesting in that it, once again, points to demographic problems for businesses in the Forest Acres area. I suppose I can understand it in the case of a furniture store, as the biggest market for furniture is young families setting up, but it still seems to me that the Richland Mall area ought to be able to tap into the generally financially comfortable suburban residents.
Apparently the store was to close its doors Saturday 2 June, but the closing sale has extended to "Make an offer Monday" on 4 June, so you still have a day left to buy the rocker.
UPDATE 6 June 2012: Added "Haverty's Furniture" to the post title based on the comments.
UPDATE 10 April 2013 -- It's now Jack Oliver Pool & Spa, but they've elected to keep the big wooden rocker, and have even given it a new coat of paint:

This building used to be home to Haverty's Furniture.

THey haven't landed any tenants. The fact that Trenholm PLaza is booming and Richland Mall has absolutely nothing going on speaks to the incompetence of its management.

Probably the downfall of this place was the furniture was WILDLY overpriced and not that great. Overly "friendly" salespeople couldn't have helped, especially for anyone at or under the age where being left alone while shopping is appreciated.

What Kenneth said, times two. I can't believe they lasted as long as they did.
If I have to haul it home and figure out how to put a nice finish on it, shouldn't it be cheaper than other furniture?
If the name of the store is Good Wood, shouldn't the stuff be made from better materials than bad knotty pine, brittle red oak and cheap poplar?

The only thing I'd like to have is the big rocking chair out front. Don't ask me why. Just something else to add to my collection of junk....:^)

I think the Haverty's was here until the early 80s.

Worked at the original Columbia location (Forest Lake Shopping Center) in 1980 as a student. The owner at the time was located in Charlotte. His inept brother ran the place.

Over the weekend, I noticed that the property has sold and I didn't catch the details due to darkness but apparently, a pool & spa place is about to open here..

In recent days, I heard an ad on the radio indicating that Jack Oliver's Pools/Spa will be moving into this building (and is having a moving sale (which I believe is an attempt to get something for it and have it sold rather than have to worry about having to move it into the new store)) from their current 2829 Millwood Ave location. A quick search of their website confirms the move plans.

When Century Capital Group bought Midtown at Forest Acres about 2 years ago, they set out on a massive blitz, in conjunction with Kahn Development to bring new life into the property. The first step in their efforts was to chance the name from Midtown at Forest Acres back to Richland Mall. They've landed a few things but nothing monumental just yet and the thing I wonder is this: As they land more tenants in Richland Mall, what will it mean for the area in general??
