J & H Grocery, 5300 Leesburg Road: 2000s(?)   6 comments

Posted at 11:20 pm in Uncategorized

I ran across this old country grocery the other day at the eastern intersection of Leesburg Road and Old Leesburg Road. I haven't been able to match the name and address in google to have any idea when it closed -- Just looking at it, it could be any time from 1970 to last week. (Although he "hours" sign on the door does look more modern than 1970). Anyway, it's the kind of place where you can imagine a barefoot kid walking in on a hot day for an RC Cola and a Moon Pie (and dropping peanuts into the soda..).

  1. I love this picture of this old place. Makes you want to pull a 6 oz. coke bottle out of the ice, sit on the front step and watch the traffic go by. With a little funeral home fan in your hand.

Makes me think of De Sto' in Blythewood.

  2. Yeah. The traffic would be a tractor and a couple of pick ups each hour.

De Sto' - man that brings back memories from when I used to work at PMSC out in Blythewood. There used to be a little place across from work called The Lunch Box as well a greasy spoon that was next door to Spivey's sevice station. Not to mention the old Wilson Motel. Man, I remember stopping by Spivey's after work, drinking a cold beer around the stove while watching the 'unique' locals come and go. All that stuff was left over from when Hwy 21 was the only way to get to Charlotte. I can only imagine what the area looks like now!

  4. Homer, I worked out at PMSC in 89-91 and the greasy spoon you are talking about was Judy's. I also recently worked out there again (2005-2010) this time for ACS (which is the old PMSC Data Center, although now it is ACS: A Xerox Company) and the buildings along HWY 21 are still there, even the vacant motel. The only thing that really changed is the addition of Blythewood High School. They also just renovated the Spivey's service station.

  5. Sidney - thanks for the update. It was Judy's. We used to go there 2-3 times a week just to get away from work and the cafeteria drudgery. I am going to have to drive out that way sometime to see what everything looks like. I actually had to spend a couple of nights at the old Wilson Motel when I pulled a 72 hour stretch because of system problems. I always thought that one of the reasons PMSC moved out there was the fact that everything was always associated with Wilson so G. Larry wouldn't have to rename anything...hahaha!!

  6. @Ted - Thanks for the link. J & H, and you can see where it once said grocery. If I could find a store that looked like Noah's Arch (pic #5) today, I would damn sure go in and purchase something.
Maybe a Slim Jim or a couple of pig's feet. I'm sure a store like this sold Vienna Sausage, pork brains, and one could probably get a thick sliced bologna sandwich on white bread, or a chicken breast sandwich with the bones still in.
Dang it, I miss little stores like this.
And do you see the horse shoe next to the door? People back then, and even today, would hang a shoe (up) like that so the luck would not "run out".

Really, I would go in and buy something.
