Jerry Kelly's / End Zone Grill, 1332 Rosewood Drive: 22 February 2008 / May 2011   16 comments

Commenter south mauldin asked a little while ago if this place were closed. At the time I wasn't sure -- I had driven by and the lot was empty, but I didn't have time to stop and check it out. The next time I went by, there was no doubt, with a For Sale sign by the road and a goodbye message on the whiteboard. That message mentions a three year run -- Somehow I thought it had been a good deal longer than that.

When I got out and looked around, I was actually rather impressed by the lot. There are some nice trees, and a stream runs along the front of the property providing a bit of lush greenspace insulating the place from the next lot over. I think the building could definitely use some windows on the front though, as it seems like it would get a bit claustrophobic in there.

While I was googling the place, I ran across this interesting thread on another blog, The Columbia Cheeseburger Crawl on Epicurious Eats. They sample the burgers at a number of Columbia's off-the-beaten-trail hideaways and render a verdict. Even though the crawl was just last year, both End Zone and Palmetto Sandwich Shop are already gone.

UPDATE 14 June 2011: Commenter Dennis provides this link to a Free Times story pinpointing the closing of Jerry Kelly's to 22 February 2008 (though the story claims that was a Saturaday when in fact it was a Friday, so the day may be off by one). It also gives a nice write-up about the restaurant itself.

UPDATE 12 September 2012 -- The place is now The Rolling Stone:

  1. When it was Jerry Kellys I drank many a beer there. George Felton (the USC basketball coach ) was a regular there.

  2. Yep, it's been three years since Jerry Kelly closed up. Here's the 2008 article about it from the Free Times:

The article mentions Sylvester Taylor, who I believe was the cook at Scrivens Alley.

  3. George Felton lost his job because he spent so much time there. I saw him often, and he was a nice guy. He got fired because he enjoyed the beer and then we got Steve Newton. Thanks Carolina. Another great move.

  4. Funny. That article Dennis posted mentioned Doug's Dogs. I ate there one time and they were the absolute worst (HAHA) hotdogs I've ever eaten. I did always think the abandoned boat sitting in the dirt in the next lot was pretty funny, though.

  5. Wasn't this the front office for a junkyard back in the early eighties?

  7. The Rolling Stone Bar has opened in this building. Looks like the focus is more of a live music venue than a restaurant.

  8. @ Dennis. I was on Pollstar last week, and saw a Rolling Stones cover band were playing in Columbia. I thought it was a typo, but it said they were playing at the Rolling Stone Bar! Columbia needs more music venues, that is for sure.

  9. Drank many a beer there when it was the End Zone. Got a little history of the place from regulars who frequented it when it was Jerry Kelly's.

Great crowds some nights but a tough location, menu could have used some updating.

Good memories and I hope the new place makes it.

  10. Apparently the new place, The Rolling Stone Bar is already in a conflict with Rolling Stone Magazine.

BTW Dennis: Welcome! You might want to consider adding an initial or something to your handle though to distinguish it from our existing commenter "Dennis".

  11. I added an initial, LOL.

I see The Rolling Stone has now closed or will do so shortly, heard about it through the grapevine from some of the End Zone crowd.

Again, a tough location, and the feral cats and whatnot around there don't help, either.

  12. I'll have to check it out. Wonder how their conflict with the magazine played out, and if that was a factor..

  13. The Rolling Stone might be closed (don't know one way or the other), but I did see a lot of vehicles parked there today. However, the USC building across the street (was it called the Roundhouse?) is being demolished.

  14. The article mentions that the Kellys were going to retire. Sadly, it was a short retirement. The restaurant closed in February, and he died in November. Here's his obit (and a mention of Downunder Columbia: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/thestate/obituary.aspx?pid=119572821#fbLoggedOut

  15. Friends there in town confirmed that The Rolling Stone has closed. Owner indicated he may open up this year with a different theme, however there has been no news about the property amongst Rosewood folks/business owners in the area.

  16. I've thought it was closed a couple of times -- even took some pictures recently, then I went by one night and saw cars there..
