Western Auto / Advance Auto Parts, 7325 Two Notch Road: Mid 2000s   13 comments

Posted at 12:58 am in closing

You can still see the empty placard in the K-Mart sign showing where the Advance Auto Parts sign used to be -- If K-Mart were in better shape itself, they probably would have pulled that down, as it looks decrepit and bad for their brand.

Anyway, the way I recall it, this space which apparently dates from 1970 like the K-Mart, was in its first iteration, a Western Auto.

The Western Auto that I remember best was the one at Trenholm Plaza, where I used to browse the Western Flyer bikes and buy those huge 1-volt carbon-zinc batteries with the screw terminals for hobby projects. I know I went into this store a number of times, but I can't really reall anything specific about it. Wikipedia says that Western Auto was acquired first by Sears, and then later by Advance Auto Parts, which phased out the Western Auto name (mostly) in 2003 (though many stores had already switch to "Advance" by then), and in fact this store was an Advance when it closed.

That history is a bit ironic since K-Mart like Western Auto was bought by Sears. If Sears had held onto the Western Auto brand a bit longer (Sears dropped Western in 1998 and bought K-Mart in 2005), they could have had some sort of super-mega store in this building

  1. Originally this was a Big Star Foods with a connecting inside door to the K-Mart. Later it was a Piggly Wiggly.

  2. Speaking of K Mart and Advance Auto Parts, there is now a sign at the corner of Rosewood and Garner's Ferry announcing that a new Advance Auto store will be built there.

So, they closed and tore down an auto parts store so they could build an auto parts store on the same spot. Hmm.

  3. Not "just" an auto parts store -- it was already an "Advance Auto Parts". Must be nice in this economy to have that kind of money to throw around!

  5. The Piggly Wiggly was my very first job I ever had. I was a bagger for acouple of years while in high school. The Pig shut down and moved up the street to a brand new store, Columbia Mall out parcel up on the hill, when it shut down it became Pier 1 Imports.

  7. Here's what happened:

Across from where Faust Street comes out at Columbia Place, there was a freestanding Pizza Hut

The aforementioned Pizza Hut moved into a shopping center (not sure what this particular center is called) on Two Notch between Leaside Drive and Arcadia Lakes Drive. Raymond Street comes out in front of said shopping center.

After Pizza Hut moved out, the building was demolished.

Following the building's demolition, a new Advance Auto Parts was built on the same site at 7030 Two Notch Road.

Upon completion of the new freestanding building of the new Advance Auto Parts, they moved out of this particular location into the current site at 7030 Two Notch Road.

Not sure of the timeline of these events, but nontheless, this is how it went down.

  11. I don't remember such, but it's possible. K-Mart seemed to have some kind of deal with "Big Star". The Fort Jackson Boulevard K-Mart definitely had a "Big Star", and it seems to me one of the others did too.
