Coconuts Music / Alltel Wireless, 276 Harbison Boulevard: 2010   11 comments

Posted at 12:55 am in Uncategorized

I never go to the Harbison Starbucks since it is in the same parking lot as Barnes & Noble, which also has Starbucks coffee, and lots and lots of books. That being the case, I was only vaguely aware of the business next to it, which google suggests was an Alltel Wireless phone store. For some reason, despite the enormous popularity of cell-phones, these places seem to come and go quite often.

I did notice the last time I was at B&N however that the next tenant in the building is to be a Chipotle Mexican restaurant. I first encountered Chipotle in the DC area. To me it is definitely a notch below Moe's (though above Qdoba), and I am not at all fond of the hard-metal-edged industrial look of the places. The contractor permit sign states that they are adding a patio to the place. It's a shame that they couldn't do that on the back side of the building. Looking out on the parking lot would be no scene of epic grandeur, but I think it would have to beat looking out on Harbison Boulevard..

UPDATE 24 Feb 2011: Added Coconuts Music to the post title based on the comments, and fixed the spelling of Chipotle.

  1. The acquisition by Verizon sealed the fate of this location, but it wasn't always a cellphone place/Starbucks. It was at one point a Coconuts Music store if I am not mistaken.

  2. Jason is right. The whole building was a Coconuts.

  3. There is an Alltel location near Dutch Square Mall, so I suspect they closed the Harbison one in part due to the presence of the Dutch Square one. And as Jason points out, when they were bought by Verizon the fate was sealed.

I can't stand that Starbucks. I go to the one in the mall when I want coffee, or I drive to Jamestown in Lexington.

  4. The Alltel Store by Dutch square is closed too. And also the one on Bush River by Walmart.

  5. @Alicia the former Altell place at Dutch Square is covered.

can't tell you about Starbucks but when they kept expnding and opening 2,000 new locations, Jay Leno was like "where are they opening them up, in existing Starbucks?" I have never been a coffee drinker and neither have my parents.

  6. I'm actually quite excited about this new restaurant! It is much better than Moes! Two of my favorite places in one building and in my favorite area to shop!

  7. I'm happy to see someone that isn't 100% fond of Moe's. I for some reason can't bring myself to like Moe's and I feel like the only one that feels that way towards them...

  8. Does Alltel only operate in certain areas of the country now? I was with Alltel but since the Verizon buyout the bill and carrier is now Verizon. Yet there are still Alltel commercials perhaps the full merger hasn't happened yet. Sorta of like how Wells Fargo and Wachovia are going. Even though I am a Wells Fargo customer and can use Wachovia ATM's free of charge to and even though at Wachovia I can withdraw money from my Wells Fargo account I still can't deposit money into my Wells Fargo account through them until the full merger happens.

As for Starbucks there's also one inside Columbiana right across the street too. The worst I've seen was at Dallas-Fort Worth Airport when there was a Starbucks shop or kiosk of some sort about every 10 gates.

  9. @Dustin, I checked out Alltell's Wiki page and from that I gather the following:

    - Alltel served 34 states prior to their 2008 Verizon acquisition and had some sort of roaming agreement with Verizon and Sprint
    - Verizon was required to divest 105 Alltel markets as a condition of the merger and Atlantic Tele-Network has bought them out and is now operating them with the Alltell name in 26 markets located in 6 states

  10. btw...within the 300 acre complex we call the Village at Sandhill (big enough to fit Columbiana Centre 5x), there are 3 Starbucks locations...one of which is inside the Super Bi-Lo

  11. I remember when the building was built and opened as a Coconuts. Bought plenty of cassettes there, both albums and blanks to make my own.
