Atlanta Bread Company, 1072 Lake Murray Boulevard: 12 May 2008 (Closed Again)   25 comments

Posted at 10:29 pm in closing

I never visited the Atlanta Bread Company on Lake Murray Boulevard, though I did do a closing on the one at Sandhill and do visit the one on Sunset every once in a while. In general, I consider ABC a step down from Panera but perfectly acceptable (though both chains skimp on the AC outlets..)

The first thing I would say about this ABC is that it's a very attractive building, especially in the evening sun.

The second thing is that I don't believe I have ever seen a closing note as extraordinary as the one taped to the door here. In its own bland and elliptical way, it's pretty devastating, especially considering the source!

UPDATE 26 September 2011: I'm marking this one as "open again" based on commenter julie's report. Presumably all the problems the first iteration had have been worked out.

UPDATE 30 September 2011 -- COmmenter Andrew sends this picture of the We Are Back sign:

UPDATE 1 April 2017 -- Finally getting around to noting in the post itself (already noted in the comments) that this place is closed again, and in fact a new operation Urban Cookhouse is now up and running:

  1. This is an interesting one. Remember this ABC used to be next to the Columbiana Grande theatres (where Which Wich is now). I remember when they built this building and then opened it. Business must have been abysmal because they didn't stay open long at all. And it's been vacant since closing more than 2 years ago.

I've always felt like ABC was a bit too expensive and uppity.

  2. I stopped there for lunch now and then and the place always did great business. I often had to wait for a seat, which must mean they're not hurting for customers. Sometimes I'd have to leave because I couldn't find a place to park.

The food, though...granted, I'm not a big ABC fan to begin with, but the food at this location usually tasted exceptionally bland to me. I'd go back thinking maybe I ordered the wrong thing, or caught them on a bad day, but nope, it was nearly flavorless every time. For what it cost I would have expected more flavor.

Very strange that the building is still empty though. It's a nice-looking building, in what I would have assumed is a great location. I noticed a new "Price Reduced" sign on it yesterday, so maybe the building's owner thought a little too highly of the property.

  3. This ABC franchise was originally in Columbiana Mall between Belk and the the food court. The reason I heard why they moved from the mall to Bowers Parkway and then from Bowers to LMB was the rent was too high.

  4. Not to hijack the thread but I think Which Wich might be closed now.

  6. Opps, my bad! I drove by there is weekend and it looked dead. I assumed for weekend they would be busier.

  7. Frankly I'm not sure why they *would* be busy. Both times I've eaten at one, I've been seriously unimpressed. The second time, despite having a system built around making it impossible to get your order wrong, they got my order wrong..

  8. I went there once when it was at Columbiana Station (near the Columbiana Grande Theater) and while it was alright, nothing too impressive...my mom and I feel the same way about Panera Bread but quite a few people mom has spoken with rave about it...

I know a lady that gets a particular salad from the Atlanta Bread in West Columbia on most Tuesdays

  9. The note is pretty funny, basically says we dont want to damage the reputation of our company by subjecting you to the bad experience of this particularly inferior restaurant. I went here once, and it was very crowded. Atlanta Bread and Panera, which I consider virtually the same, have always sounded better than their actual product. I think I go there expecting something a little nicer and healthier than a fast food place, and what I get is usually bland and mediocre at best. Which wich is actually is better than those two, and cheaper.

  10. Just drove by today and saw that this location was back open, complete with a "We're Back" on the sign out front. We'll see if second time's the charm.

  12. Over/under on how long it'll stay open again?
    I'm guessing 6 months.

  13. We drove from Piedmont, AL to Hiram, GA just to eat at ABC. Our favorite was the southwestern chicken soup. Never understood why they took it off the menu. Then one day the store was closed, we found an ABC in Douglasville, GA so we started going there, it's now closed. Then we found one in Gatlinburg, TN. Now it's closed. We love the ABC food. Definitely not a fan of Panera Bread!

  14. @Tammy, I find myself wondering how long the drive is to the places you mentioned...

My parents and I aren't wild about Panera Bread but my mom can't believe the people that rave about it...

  15. Drove by today and it is closed again! Sign in the window saying "Sorry we are closed! We will miss you all." Very disappointed :-(

  16. Hope everyone took the over, I missed it by about two years. I guess that and a lot of other stuff is why I'm not a bookie.

  17. How many more restaurants can they cram along the Lake Murray Blvd./Harbison Blvd./Columbiana Dr. corridors? I'm surprised that many more have not closed or changed names/styles than have already.....
