Howards Sports, 1113 Lady Street & 1306 Assembly Street: (still open) 6 comments
Howards Sports occupied a rather unusual building on Lady & Assembly Streets. It's unusual in that it has a frontage on both streets, but is not a corner building, but instead wraps around behind Moe Levy's (which is the corner building) and Reliable Loan Office. As far as I can tell, Howard's identified itself only with the Lady Street address, but the Loopnet listing specified both addresses.
It's definitely an interesting building even aside from the shape, brick with three levels, murals on the north side and a corner stair-case. I'm saying 2005 for the closing date, as the business license in the window was for 2004. Interestingly though, there is a 2010 license pasted below that, and the Loopnet listing above claims the building is now off the market, though it was still plastered with "For Sale" signs when I took these shots on 14 Feb 2010 and 10 April 2010.
(I see references to the name both with and without an apostrophe -- I'm going by the signs in the window and leaving it out).
UPDATE 7 Feb 2013: See the interesting note in the comments as to the history of this building. And also note that Howards Sports is still there (though looking to move) and does custom printing of sports apparel now.

This store closed way before 2005. More like 1995. I worked downtown very near it from 1989 to 2001.

Yeah, I thought it looked pretty decrepit for just being gone five years, but *some* sort of business with that name was licensed there in 2004 (though I suppose just having a business license doesn't mean you have to actually conduct business).

Jamie is correct that there was a Howard's in Parkland Plaza and it was operated by the same owner. When I was in college, I lived at the apartments right behind Parkland Plaza around 2001 or so and some of my friends worked at Howard's. That store closed and I'm pretty sure moved to the downtown store. Dennis says it closed in 1995 and that may be true but perhaps they reopened when the Parkland store when under.

I am the owner of this building. It was the old Belk Howards Department Store that started in 1942. It was added on to in 1948 which is the Lady street side that makes the building a L shape. The store moved to Parkland Plaza in 1978 as Howard's and Howards Sports. In 2000 the Department store was bought out by the Belk Co. Howards Sports today still operates as a printing apparel company. We print custom orders and several apparel lines of Ernest Lee Tees and College licensed Apparel. The building is forsale but Howards Sports is still in business and looking to move to a smaller location. http://www.howardssports.com and http://www.ernestleetees.com

Wasn't there a Howard's Sports over in Parkland Plaza? Seems like there was a Howard's Department store over there, too, where the Burkes Outlet is. Well, Burke's is half of the old department store.
