White Way Laundry / Habitat Store, 910 Harden Street: 2000s 3 comments
This rather handsome brick building on Harden Street in Five Points was, according to the Historic Columbia Foundation, built as a laundry in the 1930s (this city property valuation report claims it was actually built in 1930). I'm sure it has been many things over the years, but most recently, it seems to have been a used furniture store called Habitat Store which was associated with The Habitat For Humanity charity. I used to love going to used furniture stores, back when they were "junk stores" rather than "antique stores", but I can't ever recall this one, so I'm guessing it probably started after I left town in the mid 80s.

I remember when this was the Habitat ReStore. It took the entire building not just the right side storefront.

http://www.habitatcsc.org/shop_habitatWonderful place to save a buck on used furniture, fixtures, supplies etc. Builders donate leftovers, retailers donate scratched and dented items, and individuals donate stuff they no longer want. Definitely worth browsing before you head to Lowes to start your project.

I think it opened as the Habitat Restore around 2001 or 2002 actually. Not sure what it was prior to that.

This was and still continues to be a very cool store. They are located in the old BiLo grocery on 378 across from "The Chicken Plant." In the summer, you have to hold your breath from the time you exit your vehicle until you enter the store. I've picked up some very cool items there, plus it's for a good cause!!!
