I admit to having been completely underwhelmed the two (I believe) times I visited a Fatz. In theory I wanted to like a local chain made good, but in the event I just was not impressed. This location, on Broad River Road past Lake Murray Boulevard, was not one I had been to, though I was aware it was there. As commenter Heath (who provided some of these pictures, including the one showing that the power meter has been pulled) noted, there was no sign on the door, or any indication that the store was closed except for a makeshift barricade at the front, and the total lack of cars.

On the side of the lot there is a real estate sign, but it appears to pertain to the property behind Fatz, and as commenter Tom notes, the Fatz web site still lists this location, so I am not sure what is going on.

  1. Fatz had really good calabash, and great poppy rolls, but the service and atmosphere were really lacking. Every time our family would talk about where to eat, Fatz would come up occasionally, but never got chosen. I wonder if that's the case for other families, too. Sad to see it close, but not surprised at all.

  2. I'm also not surprised to see it go. We live nearby, and have been occasional customers in the past. After some mediocre meals, I put this place on my "probably won't be back" list a year or so ago. Then last summer we went with some out of town relatives who really liked it. It was a week night with only a few tables occupied. The whole thing was a fiasco, with our meals slowly coming at different times, no refills, etc. My meal was completely forgotten. Our server was MIA, and my wife found her holed up in the restroom crying. They seemed to have major staffing issues that they couldn't overcome.

  3. Apparently, once the original proprietor / manager Bruce left, the staffing and quality went downhill.

  4. Apparently, the company filed bankruptcy a year or so ago. I think I read it's owned by a capital company now that is trying to sell it off.

  5. I would not have been surprised if Fatz in Lexington had closed as well. They have seemed to really have gone downhill in the last few years.

This location was originally on Colonial Life Blvd in the same shopping center as the Melting Pot. Before it was Fatz it was Garfields. This would have been in the early 90’s.

  6. Went to the Fatz on Forest Drive on Tuesday night 12/10. They were doing very little business.

  7. We had a family outing at the Forest Drive location last month and our waiter (server) had tattoos and dreadlocks. You can say "OK, Boomer" all you want, but please bring back the ladies.

  8. This location had some issues found by DHEC on a routine inspection and got a C. Heard they shut down and were working to rectify, but corporate caught wind of it and pulled their franchising.

  9. @Erick

DHEC's site shows a couple of "C' ratings in October followed by four "A" ratings in November. Would their site not show a rating that resulted in a shutdown?

  10. We tried to go here a couple of weeks ago on a Sunday and discovered it was no more. No notice I had seen or heard. Went to Lexington, after calling to make sure they were still there, and had a very good experience. Broad River was never the same after Bruce left (hope he is doing well wherever) and apparently just faded away. Never been to Forest Dr since Lexington closer to St Andrews, so can't comment on them.

  11. I drove by this location yesterday (Saturday August 19). There may be some interior demo happening. There were two vehicles in the lot next to the building and a construction dumpster in the back. There were piles of carpet and other junk by the front and side doors. The dumpster looked like it had debris in it as well.

  12. During this past weekend I encountered signage revealing that a restaurant called Konnichiwa is in the process of setting up shop herein…below it specializes in Steak • Grill • Sushi.

  13. @Andrew. We have a Konnichiwa on Sunset Blvd in Lexington. I haven't been but google reviews are good.

  14. I recommend the Konnichiwa location that Beth mentioned. My husband and I have been several times. The food is always good. Interesting variety of sushi.

  15. Wasn't Old Country Buffet supposed to be opening a second location here?

    Also, sushi. Yuck.

  17. @Robin - Indeed they do. I was merely putting in my two cents like everyone else here does.

Wow. I didn't realize that Old Country Buffet had moved it's location in Lexington and that the owner had so blatantly ignored numerous laws. This seems to be happening more often these days (also with Alodias most recently) - or are we just hearing more about it for some reason or another?

  19. I have never cared for Asian restaurants...Ted has spoken here about how he doesn't care for chicken...we all have our quirks I suppose (my grandmother used to express a feeling to me that our differences "made us individuals")...Some places I've learned to say they're prospering with people besides me...I remember a sermon in October 2004 at a baptismal service I was attending the pastor mentioned a school of thought that sometimes to make a stronger tree we do have to tear off a couple of branches...
