Newsome Chevy World, 4013 West Beltline Boulevard: 2000s 8 comments
We were a Ford/Mercury family in the 60s and 70s, and are now mostly a Toyota one, so I don't know much about Chevys or this dealership. I'm saying that it closed in this millennium since there is a prominent URL posted on the building, but I'm pretty sure it's been 5 years or more since this was a going concern.
Actually following that URL leads to Capitol Chevrolet on Newland Road. This is that new dealership off of Clemson Road. I'm guessing they bought out Newsome in Columbia, though Newsome dealerships still seem to exist in other cities. (As an aside, this is the dealership with the humongous flag that I used for a 4th of July post. It was getting a bit ragged, and hasn't been up lately -- I hope they get a new one soon).
It looks like the old Newsome lot is starting to see some tagging and vandalism. I don't know who won the auction, but they need to get something going there pretty soon, or area will continue to decline.
UPDATE 30 Jan 09: Looks like the place is to be torn down soon:

It is ashame to see this area so run down. In the 60's & early 70's, this was considered Columbia's version of the auto mile. My family was a Chevrolet family just like Big E. We had 7 kids in our family, so my dad was always buying station wagons. I think the manager's name was Herbert Jones.

Anyone remember the bowling alley that was on the same side of the road? It was the right end of that strip mall a short distance back toward Two Notch.
That mall also had at various times a Woolco, a TG&Y store, and a place with huge slot car tracks where you paid by the hour and brought in your own car.

I have a 1969 Chevelle SS that was originally sold here at Central Chevrolet Company Inc. I was hoping to find more information or some old pictures.

So THIS was Central Chevrolet? My Mom and Dad bought a brand new 1969 Impala from there. I remember when Central Chevrolet was on Gervais back in the early to mid 60's. I also remember Nix VW being over here at one time too. There was Dairy Queen in that area also. I never remember a Woolco being over in that strip Mall..just Dutch Square Mall and over on Garners Ferry/Sumter Hiway through the very early 80's. I also remember when the old A&W Rootbeer Drive-In sat on the corner where M.C. Donalds is now.

We were a Chevrolet family back in the 60s/70s and this dealership, Central Chevrolet, was our place!
We did make a Ford purchase once when I was a kid... a Pulliam Ford Pinto! :)
