It seems to me that at one time, The Backpacker was on Rosewood. I have some memory of buying some dehydrated hamburgers there before a Scout camping trip. Either the owner or someone who had charge of the branded van also lived down the street for a number of years, but I don't recall specifically ever meeting them.

I am generally of the opinion that we invented civilization so as to not spend a lot of time out in the woods without a roof overhead, but to each his own, and there are some avid campers in the family (though not in the Columbia branch). At any rate, I liked the idea that if I ever had to rough it again, I knew where to go.

The State has the story, and the history of the store, which dates back to 1973.

  1. Great. Now their radio jingle will live rent free in my head for a while.

  2. I remember the Backpacker being on Harden Street across from the old Sears.

When I was a Boy Scout I bought a lot of gear from them. Nice people, who knew their stuff.

  3. Pretty remarkable that they kept the same signage and logo all those years. I had never seen quality gear like North Face and JanSport before visiting the store in 5 Points.

  5. I went to school with a couple of boys with the last name Fleming. They both worked at the Backpacker when it was on Harden. I believe the Fleming family owned the store (eventually). Guess I'll read the article about it to find out. Lol

  6. Many many many years ago Jon Bigelow and I shopped here for our hiking trips. I had known Lewis Jones when he taught at Dentsville High School. Was introduced to Malcolm while buying me new wife her first Christmas gift - a complete backpacking "rig". (We have been married for 47 years so must have been a good idea). Thanks - for all the memories.
