There's been a bit of speculation on Have Your Say about whether D. L. McLaughlin's in Irmo is closed or not. Judging from the signage on the building, both of the practical "For Sale" and the sentimental "Thanks for the memories" type, and adding in the Facebook page, I think I can say that it definitely is.

In the event, I think I only ate here once. I was a fan of the old Sub Cabin in West Columbia, and this was either the follow-on or sibling to that operation, but even though it was good, it was just too far for me to go.

Anyone know the story of the archer on the coat-of-arms?

  1. This place was open for a long time. I only ate there once (long ride from Forest Acres), and that was in the early '90s.

  2. I would occasional stop by for lunch at DL's, even though it was out of the way for me. They had the best cheesesteaks in town . . . but don't call them cheesesteaks! You had to order them as a "steak special, mixed peppers."

  3. I did an image search on coat of arms for McLaughlin and none I can find has an archer on it. No idea where they found that....

  4. Look at just 'Laughlin' instead, and you should find coats of arms with archers, and the motto 'Anchora Salutis', which apparently means 'Anchor of Salvation.'

  5. And looking at the owner's facebook page, looks like they just decided to retire and move to Chuck town. Good for them!

  6. I'd sort of forgotten about this restaurant, as I rarely make it out that way. I ate there a few times and really liked their cheese steaks. Another good cheese steak place out that way that also sadly closed a couple of years back was Interstate Steaks and Hoagies. That leaves Very's and The Kingsman as two sources of good cheese steaks; anyone know of any other good ones?

  9. I agree with Kenneth. Nick's has a good Philly steak sandwich.

  11. American Deli on Decker has a pretty good Philly steak, pretty sloppy with a boatload of fries.

  12. Donna and Lee (DL) were ready to retire. Simple as that. They had some land and, I believe, a house they were trying to sell to help finalize their retirement. I talked with Donna a good bit about this the last time we were in there (late March, early April). She said they were going to Charleston (maybe North Charleston area) to retire, but said she didn't rule out possibly doing some pop-up places now and then to keep the legacy alive and for something fun to do. I told her I was absolutely heartbroken that they would be closing, but was 100% happy for them for finally being able to retire. They had, hands down, THE best philly I've ever eaten. Much better than "real" cheesesteaks in Philadelphia (in my opinion). And great fries too. It was just ridiculously good. The meatball sub was awesome, as well. This little hole in the wall place will be missed by many, many loyal patrons but we all wish D&L a happy retirement (and hope their cheesesteak pops up now and then)!

  13. Does anyone know if the restaurant was sold and nothing has been decided on what to do? I know the for sale sign has been down for years, but nothing has seemed to changed.

    Thanks
