Today's post & pix come from commenter Mr. BO, who says

http://www.relevecafeandcatering.com/

I'm going to miss this one. They served breakfast and lunch. They
specialized in breakfast pastry and eclectic lunches. My favorite was
the Buffalo Chicken Quesadilla. Their burgers were pretty good but they
insisted on using fancy greens for their salads.

It was a Mom & Pop operation (A married couple with perhaps one more
hired help from time to time.) One of their parents took ill so they've
been closed for about a month then decided to pack up to another state
where the parent is located.

Picture # 1 is when they first opened up around a year ago. # 2 is them
closed.

I'll note that Releve's was in the old China Max slot in the food court.

(Hat tip, obviously, to Mr. BO)

I sat foot in this portion Richland Mall about a month ago and was taken aback as to how sketchy it looked becuase of how abandoned it was...someone mentioned recently that they heard that they were working to get Macy's in the former Dillard's/Blacklion...I sure hope that works out as I think Richland Mall is a better neighborhood and everything than their current spot at Columbia Place Mall...

** cue CayceKid's lament about how Richland Mall needs to rebuilt in its pre-1989 format before some Australian real estate company called LJ Hooker properties got ahold of this mall and built it to what it is now **

Growing up we shopped at the old Richland Mall often.
JB Whites, Woolworths, Meri's Records, Hickcory Farms.
I bought my wife's wedding ring from Sylvans.
My dad bought a dog for me from the pet store.
Saw many movies at the old theaters.
    Russell Stover Candies.
Seems like they had a Cromers Peanuts with the monkeys.
I had different boots and shoes re-soled at the shoe repair shop. When I was in grade school "Taps" on the heals of our penny loafers was cool and that where we had them put on. Does anyone remember taps. The teachers at school hated that. Walking down the hallway and Tap-Tap-Tap.

It is sad what this mall has become.

Rick I am too young to remember Cromer's monkeys but from what others have said, that was actually at Dutch Square as opposed to Richland...

@Andy - After checking with my Mom and Dad,
they both confirmed the monkeys were also at Richland Mall.

I don't think Cromer's had a store in Richland Mall, but monkeys were definitely in the Dutch Square store.

@Andrew - I quizzed Mom and Dad again and now they are confused about if it was Richland Mall or not that had the monkeys. But they are both almost ninety so...

Even my memory has faded substantially.
    I just remember monkeys.

@Ted - As you have eluded to in the past.

We do not have time to take care of every day activities,
someone was wrong on the internet. We must correct.

I'm wondering about the Cromers in the old Target shopping center on Garners Ferry Road with the monkeys.

I have no personal memory, but I saw on another page that there was a Cromers in Richland Mall in 1964. No mention of whether or not they had monkeys, though.

@Badger - Okay, maybe we're onto something here.
I'm still wondering how my Mom, Dad and I could be so forgetful.
Please investigate further and so will I.

It would make me feel great to say "I told you so"
even though I'm not one to say "Told you so"
    Okay, maybe I am.

I decided to check Richland Mall: The Map page and found that Ted had phone book listings from 1962, 1976 & 1985 scanned and posted and was unable to find Cromer's listed on any of them..

There was a Cromer's at Richland Mall near Merri's record shop, across from Woolworths - very small, only had popcorn and Icees for the most part. The Cromers at Dutch Square was much larger and they had monkees. There was also a Sylvan's where many of my friends got their ears pierced, a Berry's on Main, a shoe repair store, Eckerds, Winn Dixie, and maybe a Colonial Store, Merle Norman, Russell Stover had a candy story in the upper parking lot near the Esso station. Happy Bookseller started there - I remember walking to the bookstore once when we had a bad ice storm and it was safer to walk than drive.

There was a pet store at Richland Mall called Pet O Rama or something like that. On the left as you walked in, up high, there was a window that had monkeys behind it. They were wild acting and we always would go in just to check them out.

The monkeys at Riverbanks Zoo remind me of the monkeys at Richland Mall. Crazy acting, throwing their poop at the window and doing other things that I hesitate to mention here.

It could have been Richland Mall. We rarely went to that side of town but I do remember monkeys somewhere else other that Dutch Square.

I remember once at the Cromer's in Dutch Square, two of the monkeys were 'getting it on'. There were several kids, including myself, that were in awe of what was going on. Too bad parents, including mine, came in ad started snatching us out of the store. That was probably the only exposure we had to Sex Ed. until we started our own experiments.

@Homer - You pretty much said the same thing I was thinking in my comment. Can you just imagine a business with monkeys in this day and times?
The SPCA and special interest groups would be all over that business. I can hardly believe the fair is still able to have the pig races. And of course the special interest groups have already gotten to Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey concerning their elephants.
Wasn't there a store in Columbia that had an elephant?

Hmmm - I'm going to have to think about the elephant. Maybe someone else can chime in that knows. I'm sure you remember Happy the Tiger. Boy, was he (or she) ever mis-named!!

I knew about Happy the Tiger as my grandmother and I would get her car washed at Constan (But of course, Happy was long deceased by the time I came along) but can't fathom a live elephant fitting in a building such as a store (the only type of indoor building I could see it work is the Carolina Coliseum or Colonial Life Arena)...

I don't remember an elephant, so if there was one, that would have been before my time in Columbia. . . but go into Golden Corral for the breakfast buffet sometime. You'll surely see some beasts that rival them for size!

Dang Rick - how didn't I catch that? Especially after the comments I made on another post about chair abuse by certain patrons of all you can eat establishments. I feel so dumb....lol

  2. The owners separated and Mike is no longer with us. There wasn't a sick parent. Emily's food was amazing.
