As commenter Andrew noted, Mrs. C's Laundry, next to Dutch Cleaners in the IGA plaza (which seems to have no name) has shut down.

Comment: This used to be called Richardson Plaza. I do not know when they changed it. Those Window World commercials identify it as the Goodwill Plaza. This entire shopping center has deteriorated.

Comment: Phillips Edison used to have this shopping center in its portfolio and listed it as Richardson Plaza even though I never recall Richardson Plaza signage being there (even back to the late 90s).

I remember this Richardson Plaza having Characters and from what my dad has told me Sears had a surplus store here at one point. Now Harbor Freight Tools operates in the former Characters.

Next door to Harbor Freight Tools is a former Shoe Time that didn't last long that remains vacant to the best of my knowledge that I wonder what (if anything) will fill the space.

Another place I remember was Piece Goods Shop. They moved to 4350 St. Andrews Road before the whole chain liquidated (this was over the course of the mid-late 90s)...it was in the stretch where Citi Trends is now.

Then where Window World currently is it housed a place called The Close Out Co. for a while but that folded and prior to that a place called Four Seasons was there as well (not sure what type of things they sold).

I hated going in the Dollar General there because it felt cluttered and a friend of my mom's had comparable feelings towards it but now I wish something could backfill the former Dollar General space...now I tend to get a dingy and/or cluttered vibe about Dollar General stores in general.

Now I think the former Quick Buck Cash Advance (which is between the former Coin Laundry and the KJ's Market IGA) could be combined into something as well but the big $64K question is what would fit such space.

I think the Window World commercials identifying it as the Goodwill plaza follow a common MO that people seem to have (not sure I understand it) of referring to a shopping center by the name of an anchor tenant vs. the actual name on the roadside signage...at one point the Window World spokesperson used to say "Goodwill on one side KJ (sounded like KB to me for some reason) IGA on the other" on their radio commercials.

The way they've managed to get spaces backfilled gives me the impression that (at least on paper) it hasn't deteriorated the way jonathan thinks it has though it could be a case of feeling like the stores that used to be there (some that are likely before my time) that are gone now and the replacements ain't what they used to be...

Comment: Andrew's statement nailed it: 'the stores that used to be there that are gone now and the replacements ain't what they used to be...'

The area's heyday was when the stores were first built and once they went low-rent that sealed the fate. This sums up a large radius surrounding Dutch Square Mall.

Interesting stores like IT's... The Levis Place and Dixie HiFi and a local bike retailer are long gone and replaced by businesses that do not draw from all over town as they once did.

Comment: I agree totally with Terry's comment. This is the trend for most every partially to mostly vacant mall (enclosed or strip).

In order to draw people to shop the mall has to have a variety of goods and services to offer to prospective shoppers. It seems, however, that most property owners are just trying to fill spaces to get some income.

Prime examples are Dutch Square and Boozer Shopping Center. There is absolutely NOTHING that would make me go to Dutch Square. I will not even see a movie there as I have heard of several auto break-ins while people were there to see a film.

Boozer has dried up to nothing in the past few years. The ONLY reason I ever go there is to visit Manifest and, even then, it had better be a good reason.

I had to work last Saturday and cut off of I-20 onto HWY-215 to go to Edna's for my favorite hamburger and thought to myself that the entire stretch of that road made me think of what Broad River Rd. has become or will be in just a couple of years.

    It's just sad....

Comment: Terry stated that spots are being "replaced by businesses that do not draw from all over town as they once did."

I think we're living in a time when people will stay in the suburb in which they reside to do most of their shopping. My folks and I live in the St. Andrews area and I'm odd in my tendency to go shopping in different sections of town...my mom has enjoyed Trader Joe's the times she's been but has admitted that if they were in the Irmo/St. Andrews area she'd enjoy them more. Homer has hinted at an MO to do most shopping in the Irmo area...I think Rick has comparable thoughts with the Garners Ferry area. I'm a rarity that I'm willing to shop in different sections of town to shop for different things just to experience all over Columbia the knowledge of what is where that I've gained as a result of it has been handy to relate to people in different settings (including but not limited to this blog)...

I have a hard time seeing the downhill trajectory the way everyone else does since I'm so young (so young that I was a toddler when Columbiana opened) as clearly as most of the others here do (especially with Dutch Square)...

Comment: I had forgotten about Close Out Co until Andrew mentioned it above. That would be a good closing post to do someday. It closed in this plaza and moved to the small "plaza" down the street from Green's. It went out of business there too from what I recall.

Comment: There was a San Jose in this shopping center until the mid to late 1990s. I believe it is the one that relocated to the old Quincys on Piney Grove. I'm pretty sure it was a pizza place (Pizza Factory?) before that?

Comment: Now that Heath mentions it I do recall an eating place being in the area where Citi Trends is now in the 2003-05 timeframe but I never made note of what it was called. After it folded up Citi Trends wound up utilizing their old space as part of the space they now occupy between Goodwill and Harbor Freight Tools...
