Stay Safe!   1 comment

Posted at 2:10 am in Uncategorized

As you may have guessed from the infrequency of posts lately, I've been out of town. It sounds like everything broke loose while I was gone. I see today I can't even count on driving back.

Everybody keep dry and stay safe!

UPDATE 6 October 2015 -- These pictures come in from commenter Rick who says:

The first picture is of a brick retaining wall next to my driveway where we park behind the house. So much water came down the hill in my backyard, about 35 feet of the wall collapsed.

The second photo was taken with me standing at the end of my driveway. The dam at the lake across the street from my property breached and so much water came rushing by it pushed a car into the ditch.

Sorry about the quality of the second photo. It was raining hard and I must have moved while trying to hold the umbrella. I did not check the photo before rushing back inside.

Well, we can see the car going off the road, which is the gist of it..

Has anyone heard any more about the Old Mill Dam in Lexington failing? They said something on the news about it earlier..

@ Homer - Yes, the Dam at Old Mill in Lexington was breached. US 1 (East Main Street) is closed and will be for several days while they survey the structural integrity of the road. some pictures indicate the asphalt cracked and buckled on the edge of the road nearest the dam and some other comments have indicated that Rhoten's Country Store which sat across from the dam will be a complete loss. Rhoten's has been in business for 70 years (October 2015) according to their Facebook page.

@James R - that is a shame about Rhoten's. I used to stop by there when I was over in Lexington to pick up some of their sausages. There was something they used to season them that was very unique that I haven't tasted in any country sausage that I have had before.

Did anyone hear about the people that were calling in to WIS and WLTX wanting to know why the football games were being preempted? I hope these were just asshats trying to be pests. No matter how redundant the reporting got as time went on, it is the media's job to report on any changes that may be occurring the public's welfare. I know that this is a weak analogy but I wonder if anyone called in on 9/11 wanting to know why 'The Price is Right' or 'Days of Our Lives' weren't on??

There are football fans that very much missed their games yesterday. Considering the psychology that many football fans have I'm sure there are people missing seeing their games and I've gotten to where I find it ridiculous how worked up sports fans get over games and it's tough to be involved when I don't know any of the players from Adam.

9/11 was another ballgame entirely. I was in 8th grade when 9/11 happened and remember many networks such as Food Network, HGTV, etc. suspending programming in light of the events of that day but I'm sure that there were people out there that missed their normal programming, soap operas, etc. I myself don't watch much TV so it's not a big issue for me.

It's just like there are people that hate shows like Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy! or other prime time programming being preempted for football games, public office candidate debates or presidential addresses.

Many times when this happens networks run their shows in the middle of the night (1-3 AM time frame)...

Didn't expect the whole city to be closed! Take care, and I hope that your lives are back to normal soon.

Not only were schools closed but also many non-emergency doctor's offices as well as many dental and orthodontic offices closed as well.

Another one that captivated me as I was watching WIS's coverage of all this stuff was that Columbia Place Mall was closed.

My mom and I ventured out and I noticed that most of Harbison Court was closed as was a signficant portion of Columbiana Station (except around Wild Wings). I wasn't sure about the Publix-Target section but I doubt that was functioning at 100%.

I live off Garners Ferry Road, and if any of you have been watching the news, you know the devastation that took place on this side of town.

Lots of free water But it has minerals added. People with CPAPs ( like Me ) need distilled water. None available in stores

Went to Whole Foods over the weekend. They didn't flood but had no phone service and are in the "Boil Water" advisory area. That means they can't put out their shellfish, fresh whole fish (can't trust the ice) and they can't accept debit cards. (Though they can accept credit cards.)

They lost a lot of food when the power went out the weekend of the storm.

Trader Joe's was also open this weekend. Since everything they sell (except in the produce isles) is packaged, no restrictions there.

Of course with Gills creek being between where I live and where I want to go, routes are pretty circuitous....

I've had potable tap water again since Saturday night, but it comes with the caveat that, just going by smell, it's at least 90% chlorine. Still, that's far better than how it smelled last week.

We went to go see a movie at Sandhills yesterday, and their soda machine was out of commission because of the water situation. So they were selling 20 oz. room temperature bottled waters and bottled Cokes for $5 apiece instead, because they can.

A message I left for SCDot

Dealing with the reality of the congestion on our roads, I have some suggestions. There are a couple of choke points I'm seeing.

One is at Rosewood where it meets with Garner's Ferry/Devine. Since we're not going to see any traffic between Cross Hill/Devine to Rosewood any time soon you need to adjust the traffic lights to not allow traffic from that direction giving more time to those trying to make it from Wildcat rd and Rosewood to make it up Garner's ferry.

Forest Dr. from Beltline to Trendholm is a parking lot at 4pm. Suggest you give the people trying to make it from the city to I-77 a break at that light.

Surely adjusting traffic lights is a lot easier than fixing the roads.

Wonder what the response will be?

The response was very helpful and professional. They're looking at changing the traffic lights.

One glimmer of hope is that the Devine/Garner's Ferry rt between Cross hill and Rosewood is a US route so its priority is pretty high.

I feel that Trenholm and Forest is a congestion prone intersection and I hope they can do what they can to attempt to make it better but only time will tell. I do know that there are new traffic lights with grey covers at Trenholm & Forest that tells me they're experimenting with a new traffic light system that will perhaps enhance the flow.

I'm also hopeful that the work on the SCDOT Carolina Crossroads interchange will eventually overhaul the interchange of I-26 & I-20 that has been known as 'malfunction junction' for over 20 years. The problem is that the process is very involved and time consuming. They have a site called scdotcarolinacrossroads.com where you can learn about this project and offer any ideas you have for how the Carolina Crossroads corridor can be improved. I went to the two public input meetings they've had and many people (myself included) have had a variety of ideas on how to improve this area and the committee was genuinely very appreciative of them all.
