Piggly Wiggly #77, 2000 Clemson Road: 5 April 2014 9 comments
Another day, another Piggly Wiggly.
This store, at the corner of Clemson and Hardscrabble Roads, looks like it was a pretty nice one, though I can;t ever recall going inside. I might have thought that it would have benefitted from the closing of the Food Lion across the street, but in this case the ongoing woes of the chain seem to have outweighed any additional traffic from displaced Food Lion shoppers.
The closing of this store started rather oddly, with an "inventory reduction" sale. Since there is no reason for a grocery store to ever have such a sale in the normal course of events, this seems to have been some sort of signal that the store was closing before the management was able to say that officially.
This closing will be a big hit for Magnolia Pointe, as The Pig was the only anchor in the main strip of the shopping center. There is a CVS in an outparcel region, but that won't bring shoppers in to the shopping center proper.

Divesting 29 stores to Bi-Lo and Harris Teeter was not enough for Piggly Wiggly Carolina to stop the bleeding. Remaining stores are being closed or sold as needed. I am not surprised to see this store close as more stores face uncertainty in the future.
This Piggly Wiggly store did not have a pharmacy. That was a major negative. Food and pharmacy are necessities and are standard in supermarkets now. Having a pharmacy would have helped bring in business and keep the store open.

New rumor says IGA might be moving into this location.

I wouldn't be surprised to see KJ's Market IGA open here (reading into their recent opening at 543 St. Andrews Road (former Food Lion at Richardson Plaza))...I also see the same possibility for the former Reid's in Cayce...

On the heels of this one closing, the Piggly Wiggly warehouse in Jedburg had planned for a 3 day inventory reduction sale (Thursday (19), Friday (20) and Saturday (21)). In the process, they sold everything out in 1-1.5 days...

The Piggly Wiggly at Cayce Crossing is doing a 20% off everything sale in what the signage is calling an 'inventory reduction sale'...then when you check out (I bought a couple of things there on Thursday (Aug 8)) they call it a "20% store clsng sale" on the receipt...the inventory was starting to thin out but there was plenty of stuff left stuff was continuing to thin out...it appears to be going through what this Magnolia Pointe store was going through before it closed...
This doesn't do anything to refute a comment on the Irmo Piggly Wiggly page that reads "Simply put, Piggly Wiggly is a dying grocery chain."

Cayce Crossing is at 50% off now. The Shelves are getting bare. I don't think they'll last to the expected closing date which I believe is Aug. 22.

Folks it appears to me as if this space has been subdivided between Family Dollar & Dollar Tree...

This was a nice little store with very nice staff. I am sorry to see it go. They carried some unique items that could not be found elsewhere (like original Spiedie sauce from Binghamton NY). I actually think the Publix up the way might have done them in more with the bogo items. Hard to pass that up when you are on a budget.
