Decker Billiard Club, 1803 Decker Boulevard: fall 2009   7 comments

Posted at 2:42 am in closing

I don't play pool (now air-hockey is a game!), so this club has only been on the periphery of my notice over the years, but I was conscious enough of it that it caught my eye when I saw new signs up the last time I drove down Decker to I-77.

Doing a little googling I find that it has something of a tragic history, with the co-owner being fatally shot there in 2006. Google also insists that the place has been called Sue's Lounge though the Google Streetview for "Sue's Lounge" brings up the old Decker Billiard signage on the place.

The new name of the place is La Parranda which apparently means "The Big Party" in Spanish (and a song of that name was a hit for Gloria Estefan..), so I'm assuming that the ownership has switched from Korean to latin, though the graphic on the sign seems to indicate that pool and alcohol will still be available.

UPDATE 25 April 2013 -- Well it's back, sorta. I hope they didn't pay too much for those signs:

  1. In my wasted youth we shot pool pretty often at The Red Carpet Lounge, a remodeled convenience store with a few pool tables and a very lenient attitude about what the drinking age was, on the southeast corner where Decker meets Crossfield.

The building is now a couple of tiny storefronts.

    Anyone else ever go there?

  2. It was called Sue's Lounge by the previous owners. My mother owned/ran the joint.

  3. yea, dennis. i remember going in to shoot pool in there from time to time. they were definitely lenient on the driking age. them and the lady at the pantry, mary. could buy smokes and beer almost before we could drive! jeez, kind of embarassing...

we mostly went to dino's to shoot pool tho. it had galaga and mrs. pac-man, haha.

  4. Ok folks the Dino's located within walking distance of this location at 1801 Decker is about to reopen per a WIS report. I haven't been myself but I did some reading into it and it appears to ahve a good mix of Greek, American and Asian food so it has a little for everyone. While I realize Decker may not be the best area, let's hope (and pray as we are inclined) the Kim family can continue following the death of Steve Kim (the owner) to try to help give Decker Blvd. the new life it desperately needs. I don't know when (or even if) this will pop up on my radar as a place to go but I am certainly open to going if it does.

The suspect in the robbery and shooting went a spree before shooting and killing himself in the parking lot of the Walgreens at 7801 Garners Ferry Road. Let us pray as we are inclined for peace for all involved...
