Piggly Wiggly / Ace Hardwarehouse, 300 West Main Street (Lexington): 2010   14 comments

Posted at 2:01 am in closing

Judging from this LoopNet listing this property was sold in bankruptcy (or that's what I take "Onsite Auction- By Order of Secured Creditors" to mean) on 30 Aug 2010, so obviously the hardware store closed some time earlier than that -- certainly all the branding is gone in the LoopNet picture.

It's not a good time to be a non-big-box hardware store I'm afraid. This little plaza is really hurting as well. It looked like the only business still in operation was a restaurant, though judging from the curb sign Radius Church will be moving into the hardware space in the near future.

UPDATE 15 Jan 2011: Added Piggly Wiggly to the post title based on the comments.

  1. This building was originally a Piggly Wiggly.

  2. Was this still open when Ace Hardwarehouse closed in Cayce?

  3. I wonder if there is a Piggly Wiggly/Ace connection. There was a Piggly Wiggly on Frink Street in Cayce that becam an Ace. Then it sat vacant and became a thrift store. Then it sat vacant and became a church. Now it is vacant again.

  4. I believe Ted could have done a large website devoted to nothing but closed Piggly Wiggly's, A&P's and Winn-Dixies in Columbia! (No, that is not a suggestion. )

  5. I've thought about doing one devoted to those old Mom and Pop style gas stations...

There was a Pig on Platt Springs Road that became a fire alarm factory for a while. I don't know what it is now.

  8. I love those old Piggly Wiggly buildings. I think there are still one or two left in Myrtle Beach. The last I remember in Columbia was on Platt Springs Road next to Bill's Wholesale used car lot.

  9. Is the Piggly Wiggly in the original building still open in Batesburg, SC? Or Prosperity, SC?

  10. @Tonkatoy, the fmr. Piggly Wiggly on Platt Springs Road is now something by South Conn Technologies, Inc. that operates out of that building and redid it to look not like a former Piggly Wiggly a few years back...however, I am not familiar with the former Pig on Frink Street you reference and what's there now

  11. This plaza has a Dry Cleaners and a Restaurant. There was a Department of Social Service for Lexington County but they have moved to South Lake Drive. Otherwise stilla terrific location for the new Radius Church.

  12. Andrew, it may have been a Winn-Dixie, but I think it was a PIg. It was an Ace Hardware after it was a grocery store. Its on the corner of Frink and Orchard.
