The Free Times / First Source Mortgage / WPC Engineering, 130-A Sunset Boulevard: late 2000s   7 comments

This interesting little building is on Sunset Boulevard just south of the chicken plant. According to LoopNet it's now off the market, though the realty sign was still out front a few days ago when I took this picture. (The picture at LoopNet still has the WPC signage up).

I don't know anything about First Source or WPC Engineering or what happened to them, but apparently the town of West Columbia offices are also at 130 Sunset. I'm not sure if that means in the back of this building, or somewhere else on the lot. The utility-sounding West Columbia filtering plant is supposed to be at 130 as well.

UPDATE 5 Nov 2010: See the comments -- It was also the Free Times building for a while, so I've added that to the post title.

UPDATE 7 May 2012 -- This place is now Kickstand Studio a wedding and commercial photography studio. Looks like they got the kudzu or whatever off the building and power pole too:

  1. This was the office of the Free Times at one time (maybe around 2000?). I' wonder if someone who works there might be able to verify that?

  2. The West Columbia filtering plant is the nice way of saying the West Columbia sewage treatment plant. It is next door to the chicken plant. The West Columbia street numbers must be really hosed because the filtering plant is about a block away.

  3. I didn't work at the Free Times, but I sometimes dropped things off there (this was in 1998).

  4. Had they just moved from Saint Andrews Road?

  5. Yes, this is the old Free Times building. I started there in 1998; I'm not sure how long the office had been located there at that point, but probably not more than a year or two. We moved to Devine Street a couple of years after that.

We had some interesting times there ... such as when a couple of staffers caught some dry grass on fire in the back when they dropped cigarettes. The Chinese restaurant across the street saved us on that one: They saw smoke and called us, and it was put out before it became a big deal.

Then another time a guy getting chased over the bridge by the cops ditched them by ducking his car into our back parking lot. That was a bit scary, as I was the only one in the office at the time and there was a fugitive on the loose.

  7. I want to think that I also remember a restaurant supply business there, as well...
