I'm trying to recall the last movie I saw at Dutch Square, but I believe it was during the AMC era, and I don't believe I ever went to the Bow Tie operation.

This decade has not been a good one for theaters, and I expect it to get worse and to not ever return to previous levels. That's a shame as there is nothing like sitting in a full house during a good movie, but times move on. I know that the old Spring Valley Commons Theater went to storage and office space. We'll have to see what happens here, but I don't expect another cinema to move in.

Here are The State & The Post & Courier on the closing.

  1. According to their website, this chain has only 7 theatres in 4 states. Per Wikipedia they owned 63 theaters in 2013.

  2. The last (and only) time I went to Dutch Square theaters was for the premier showing of Star Trek 4. It was at 7am so I could catch it and get to work only an hour late.

I arrived at 5am to be first in line by only 15 minutes. A group of folks drove by and asked if I wanted any coffee, I said yes and they came back minutes later with the coffee. It was a great group of people. By the time the doors opened, there was a huge line out the door with donuts being served and the theater was packed.

It was one of the greatest times I ever had at a movie theater full of dedicated and very enthusiastic fans.

We'll never see a time like that at a theater again.

  3. "Dinner and the movies" was such a classic first date for many potential couples.

  4. Also (I meant to add in my previous comment), it seems like more and more places are banning people under certain ages at various times. And I mostly understand why. Although, a 16-year-old troublemaker could have older siblings or parents who are not much better.

  5. I saw lots of movies at this site since it opened probably 30 years ago. Covid was bad for the movie business but I think it was the gut punch for this place. It had steady patronage by seniors until then. BTM did have reduced prices compared to others with a $6 senior admission that I took advantage of. I never went in the evening but the day attendance was very sparse in the last few years.

  6. Star Trek 4 was the last movie I saw with my mother, and as I have mentioned, we saw that at the now demolished Tara Theater in Litchfield.

I forget the last movie I saw here (though it would not have been Bow Tie yet), but I recall the last movie that I tried to see, apparently I was the only one who bought a ticket, so they decided to continue selling tickets for another movie and show it in my auditorium as well as the normal ones. I was quite confused.

  8. I went there in early February for a matinee showing of "September 5." It was the only theater around here showing it. I'd bought my ticket online and was prepared to show it to the admission folks, but no employees were in sight anywhere. I found the theater, got what turned out to be a private screening of the movie, then when the movie was done I went out to the parking lot and drove off, all without encountering another human being. It made me sad, since I remember the place when it was alive and fun to be at.
