Sometimes it seems as though restaurants go through phases, and for a while the "build-your-own-pizza" phase was hot. I never went to Blaze, but I have been to Mod, and I understand that it's a similar experience: You go through a line like you are building a buritto except it's a pizza, and after you have all your toppings they quick-fire it and there you go.

It's a concept that has been going through some tough times as Mod went through bankruptcy recently and closed locations, 1000 Degress never got here, and now all the Midlands Blaze locations have shut down.

Blaze is not the first restaurant to close in this storefront, back in 2013, it was Al Amir with the place sitting vacant, I believe, until Blaze moved in in 2016.

Here is the story in The State & The Free Times.

  1. There was a similar place in North Charleston called Pieology. We went there a few times in the late 2010s. The pizzas were good, but I saw a couple of online reviews complaining about the price. Since you pay for the possibility of unlimited toppings. Most of the remaining locations are in the Western US.

  2. I'm actually kind of surprised these kinds of places have lasted as long as they have. We tried both Blaze and Mod once not long after they opened and found the pizza to taste decent enough, but the price and the concept just didn't add up for us and we never went back.

How is it REALLY any different from every other "regular" pizza place? You tell them what toppings you want and they make it. Now if they were set up in such a way that YOU could make your pizza yourself and then they just cooked it for you -- that's a concept I would find different and worthy of paying a higher price.
