A Three Hour Cruise..

I'm not too familiar with Gilligan's, but I know there was at least one other in Litchfield Beach which closed last year and is now an ABC store. This one was in Lexingtion on North Lake Drive just east of the Books-A-Million strip mall.

I think that clearly this building and the old Zorba's On Two Notch shared the same design. Whether that means this was originally a Zorba's or that they were both originally something else I'm not sure.

UPDATE 24 February 2015: Updated the closing date in the post title based on the comments.

UPDATE 19 August 2016 -- This is now Mr. D's Steakhouse, now owned by the mayor of Lexington, Steve MacDougall. Here is The State story of the restaurant's opening, and here is The State story on MacDougall going from manager to owner.

Comment: There used to be one on Two Notch as well; it's been gone for a while. I think it was around the Wal-Mart shopping center. They had decent food, nothing spectacular. Of the few times I ate there, I stuck with simplicity, like fish and chips or fried shrimp. I think the Two Notch location is now a Buffalo Wild Wings or some other wing joint.

    Comment: Zorba's used to be a Gilligan's.

Comment: The Two Notch location (along Rivkin Blvd) actually started out as Gilligan's, THEN Zorba's came along but then they wound up leaving. After a period of vacancy, Buffalo Wild Wings set up shop and has been there ever since.

I wanted to eat there when Zorba's was there but it never worked out...

Comment: It is very simple! The food really sucked. I am amazed it lasted this long. This would be a great location for a steak house since Lexington does not have one. Hmmm wonder how many pizza places are in Lexington? You would be shocked!

Comment: I believe this has always been a Gilligan's, I remember when it was built. When I was out that way a few months ago I remember thinking, "What the hell? That place is STILL open??" Clearly it finally caught up with itself. Yuck!

Comment: April this one in Lexington has always been Gilligan's...they had a Northeast location that closed well before this one (we're talking 2004/05 timeframe) that had Zorba's for a while and now houses Buffalo Wild wings...

I went once to this one with family but never made it back...I think the distance was the main issue as my folks don't like to trek outside the Harbison/Irmo/St. Andrews area for stuff like this very much...I frankly am not one to eat at these types of places solo and sometimes wish I had folks besides family to enjoy places like this to eat (especially in Northeast Richland)

Comment: I didn't realize this place was still open. My ex and I ate at the Lexington location when it first opened. It was expensive and not very good. We never gave it a second chance.

Comment: Gilligan's has been closed much longer than January 2015. It closed in June of last year. Beth first mentioned it in "Have Your Say" on June 22, 2014 and then a day later John R reported that the staff had been let go a week earlier. This would put the closing date about June 16, 2014.

Comment: There is some confusion on that closing. I ate there in the fall of last year. I hate it closed. The service was always top notch, and the food, esp the hushpuppies were some of the best I ever had.

Comment: @James R - You are correct about Gilligans. I went there often and live nearby, so I knew right away when they closed. @John - I really liked it too. I was very disappointed when it went out of business.

Comment: Andrew, sometimes your post make me sad. Your family doesn't want to drive all the way from Irmo to the north side of Lexington to eat out? And then this, "...I frankly am not one to eat at these types of places solo and sometimes wish I had folks besides family to enjoy places like this to eat... "

Comment: @JBL and Andrew - I can relate to Andrew's comments as well. I don't know what his situation is but I am living with my elderly Mom (took care of both parents until my dad passed away in 2013) and I can't get her to venture out to eat at a restaurant or just to take a Sunday drive.

She will, however, go shopping with her sisters (which is fine for me, since I hate shopping). The only restaurant food we have is what I can bring home as take out. What with work and taking care of the old homestead I have very little time to pursue a social life of any kind and it totally sux!!!!

That's one reason I am trying to build up my retirement funds as quickly as possible so I can tell the corporate world to kiss my a$$. Maybe, then, I can have some time to enjoy interests that I have no time to pursue at the present.

Comment: Hearing that a new restaurant will open in this location in the next three months. To be called Anderson's.

  3. I asked one of the managers @Carolina Wings who I consider reliable and he told me that Mr. Bentley (formerly of Bentley's Beach house) and Mayor MacDougall are partnering to open up a new restaurant called "Mr. D's".

  4. I happened to drive by this place yesterday (for the first time in years) and surprisingly this former restaurant is now a dentist office.
